I am glad that you asked this question.

First, caffeine is a vasoconstictor (it shrinks your blood vessels) thereby, it increases your heart rate and blood pressure. This is why caffeine is so effective for treating headaches.

Second, caffeine is also a diuretic (it makes you pee).

Therefore, if you are already dehydrated, then the caffeine will not have enough blood volume to shrink down the vessels to increase your blood pressure, and the caffeine will increase your dehydration to make you more tired.

Tip: this is what I do. Drink at least 3 to 4- 8 ounce glasses of water before drinking one cup of coffee. You will run to the bathroom in 20 minutes, but you see that you will have more pep and energy and use the 3 to 4 rule with every cup. You will find that you need less coffee to give you more energy

    Coffee Makes Me Sleepy

For me I think it must cause gas. Sometimes it hits me right away and other times as long as the next day and can last several days till I burp. Sometimes it goes away with one burp and sometimes it lifts gradually as I burp. The burps arent uncontrolled-I feel the need and then I do. My face even changes as soon as I do. Until then I am COMATOSED and can barely keep my eyes open. Since I stopped drinking coffee its 90 per cent better. I am so glad I figured this out. It has actually been a handicap in my life it is so severe. I hope this helps someone...

Caffeine makes me super sleepy as well. All meds have the opposite affect on me. I drink a ton of water a day... at least 8 to 10 16 oz bottles... I am not sure why it makes me sleepy. What do you put in your coffee? I put espresso in mine.

Caffeine makes me tired too. That is why I switched to rice coffee. Driving long hours at night I need to stay awake and alert, and the caffeine was not working.

THAT HAPPENS TO ME OCCASIONALLY, I KNOW WHEN I'VE HAD MY LIMIT; BOTH WAYS, BECAUSE SOMETIMES, I CAN START TO GET REAL 'GOOFY' IF I'VE HAD TOO MUCH; & DEFINITELY CANNOT DRINK IT PAST NOON, OR CANNOT GET TO SLEEP THAT NITE; DRUGS DO REACT DIFFERENTLY WITH DIFFERNET PEOPLES' BODIES, & AT DIFFERENT TIMES, ALSO.

I agree with nurse curtis, but also maybe how much sugar u put into it- I know when I put more sugar in mine I get more sleepy later rather then when I put less in. (so during the weekends I can put more than the weekday when I need to move around more)

Caffeine is a chemical, a drug and each body is different, For instance, Caffeine doesn’t affect me I can drink it for hours…nothing.

Every drug affects everyone differently, that is really all there is to say on the subject.

Caffeine is acts as a stimulant chemical in the brain and some other tissues of the body. It can also block an inhibitory neurotransmitter (brain chemical) called adenosine. Adenosine acts on our brain to calm things down and even bring on a sleepy feeling. When we have caffeine, the brain produces more adenosine to counter the caffeine. If you feel sleepy after drinking coffee then your body is producing even more adenosine than normal. The caffeine and adenosine compete for brain receptors and the adenosine wins out.

You're likely just caffeine resistant, and those cups of coffee work like a big ol' mug of warm milk.
