How hard is it to become an Enrolled Agent?

I've been told the IRS Enrolled Agent exam is now computer based and has 4 parts. I do not have a tax background. How hard would it be for someone like myself to pass the EA exam? Any current EAs care to comment?

Without a tax background, passing would be extremely unlikely. It is a very comprehensive exam covering a lot of tax topics. If you are really interested in becoming one, I suggest taking some tax courses at an area community college and study, study, study! Also, if you are a CPA, you can not be an EA.

You can too be a EA if you are a cpa. An EA is a tax expert and has a leg up on a cpa when it comes to taxes. An EA can also serve in every state but a cpa has a state limitation. A cpa is the most prestigious award in accounting and the hardest certification to receive.
