bad cupling, cost you couple dollars, kenmores are direct driven, no belts, means the agitater is connected to the transmission, which is directly connected to the motor, which is a reversible motor, one direction it agitates the clothes and the other direction speed and drain.

so answer to your question, is a broken motor cupling.

Source(s): im a service technician. and work mainly on kenmore.

you may have a bad timer. that thing you spin around then pull to start your washer has contact points in it. these are like little switches that tells your washer what to do, like open the water valve to fill it, agitate, turn on the pump to drain the water and spin. sometimes the contact points can burn up causing them to not close completely. a new timer will run you about $100. this recently happened to me. i was able to take the timer apart and clean the contacts and get it to work again. if you choose to do this, take care in noticing how the timer goes back together.

It sounds like the belt might be broke that turns the agitator. Mine did the same thing and I had to but another one . you could possibly be able to have some one install a new belt . If you know of someone who is handy at fixing things. Good Luck.

kenmore washing machine ...... thats pretty vague...... front or top loader? does it agitate? is your out of balance lite coming on when it needs to spin? is your lid open? there are a multitude of reasons and each model is different, so you have to be more specific.

there is a coupler that connects the motor to the transmition, very common problem the part is like 12$ and easy to install... basic hand tools!

The belt probably broke. Call an appliance service company and they will fix it for you.

The pump is gone. it can be expensive to replace.. IT might be time to buy a new one.especially if its past warranty.

They are not as expensive as they were years before
