Is abortion more for birth control or to save the life of mothers who shouldn't give birth?

Every pro-choice person I know says abortion should be legal to save women's lives, but it seems that 999 out of 1000 abortions are for convenience.

Honestly I think it's becoming more of a form of birth control (which is disgusting).

where did you get that "999 out of 1000" number? Instead of believing some number that some anti-abortion person gives you, why don't you do some research on your own?

An abortion is never "convenient." It's a difficult procedure, and an even more difficult decision for any woman who has to make it. The anti-abortionists who go around claiming that all these women have sex all they want without taking any precautions and don't care 'cause they just go get an abortion are so far off base -- the decision to have an abortion is never an easy one, and very few of the performed abortions are for "convenience."

Some women can't afford to raise a child (especially if the low-life father his ditched her). Some have physical problems which would be life-threatening in birth. Some are raped. Some have medical complications (I know a woman who had one because she got very sick shortly after becoming pregnant with a virus [not STD], and the doctor told her the baby would be born with deformities). There are lots of reasons.

The real question is, why do you want to dictate what these women can and can't decide what to do with their own bodies? It's their decision, for their reasons, and none of your business. Most anti-abortion people are all gung-ho about outlawing it until they get into a tough situation...then they're more than happy to make use of it. Hypocrites.

Sometimes it is to save a child's life. A woman may get pregnant when she is too young or too poor to start a family. She needs to establish herself before she takes on the work of raising a child. If she had the baby, it would have a terrible life without a mature mother. She would not be able to afford healthcare, food, and toys. Also, if she was not married at the time of the child's birth, the child would be missing a crucial part of his family. If a woman gets the abortion, she will most likely have more than one kid when she is ready to start a family. These kids would not exist if she had had the first baby. They will grow up well, because their mother will be able to afford health care, food, clothing. She also may have saved up money so she can spend more time with the baby, instead of working. So, sometimes an abortion can help the lives of mothers and babies, but it should not be seen as a method of birth control.

Abortion is Murder in the first degree committed by the woman and her doctor. Its called choice Yes I do believe a woman has the right to choose, but the choice comes when she deciedes to have sex. Should I have sex or shouldn't I? If she decides to have sex then she MUST understand that there is a good chance that she could get pregnant. Once she is pregnant her choice is no longer there, because now another human being's life is involved (her unborn child).

more than 99% of all abortion/murders are committed simply because the mother does not want her child. Actually less than 1% have anything to do with saving the mother's life, rape, incest, etc. that is documented medically.

I think its a sad case when mothers kill the own babies. Through the centuries the mother has always been the protector of the family and now she kills those who trust in her.

Ladies hang yours heads in shame.

The majority of abortions since they have become legal have not been done to save a mothers' life. Abortion is an operation and all operations have a certain amount of danger. The gov't never should have enterd this arena. Let the Dr. and the mother determine what is necessary to save lives.

On another track. Calling a baby a fetus not a person is on a par with calling a blackman or an American indian savages.

Even before abortion was legalized people did it for their own personal reasons. Abortion is not a new idea just for the past 30 some odd years a legal one. Many women had them when they were illegal to do so.. many died from those back alley abortions or where so scarred they couldn't have children after that. It has always been about choice it is now that the choice is legal within the confines of secular law.

Abortion is for birth control if the girl that is pregnant is a total and complete moron! And if that's the case, she shouldn't be having sex at all. I don't believe abortion is needed if the girl and guy are smart enough to be responsible when having sex. USE CONDOMS! They are FREE!!!!!!! Yes they are....! Health clinics people! It infuriates me when girls have abortions because they were too stupid to use a condom. They are getting rid of something that could have been an important person in the future. Maybe he would have invented the cure for Cancer. Also, it takes away from all the people that can't have children and want some. So if you are stupid enough to get yourself pregnant, keep the baby and give it up for adoption. There are couples out there who would make better parents than you.

Its a very charged subject. The only thing I think of when I think of abortion is who that child could have become.Maybe someone that could have contributed to the world an Einstein a De Vince,A Martin Luther King a Gandhi who knows maybe a star athlete. An unwanted child could be a blessing to those who felt it a burden. Then again I'm only one person with one opinion and male.Life is a precious thing and I'm glad that someone didn't take that away from me.I'm glad that I've been able to experience this journey. The good the bad all of it.Even in the cases of insist or rape it really isn't the child's fault for these crimes.I know its easier to talk about it from the outside looking in but these are my thoughts. I don't judge those who make that choice but can not respect their decision either.

Hmm, this is a toughy... I think that it should be pro-choice although I personally could never live with myself for doing it, I believe that children should not have children and that it is unhealthy for children to have children and if they are strong enough to make that decision and their parents are in agreement with them, then they need to do what is best for them. I believe that accidents happen and people have abortions for convenience and I am not in agreement with that either. I would not really call abortion birth control... if they don't want to have kids DONT HAVE SEX! Its that simple.

Abortion to me is not cold blooded murder as some would prefer to call it, but in a way it is killing apart of them (expectant mothers) regardless of their age. They will forever remember the choice that they made. I would rather some kid have an abortion than kill themselves because they couldn't get an abortion

I, too, have to agree with you on this one. Personally, I don't beieve in abortion, unless it is needed to save the life of the mother, or if it is due to rape. Abortion shouldn't be used because it is convenient. If you play, you should pay the consequences. (even if it is just for 9 months) There are millions of couples out there, that can't have a baby of their own. Be responsible, and give the baby up for adoption!!

    Well define convenience...

My support of abortion is to prevent women from having to give up the possibility of finishing school or fulfilling some other endeavor that will allow then to lead a full, productive, and self-sufficient life.

And to prevent children from being brought into this world born to women who must leave the kids in daycare, work 2 min. wage jobs, live off welfare, and basically not be able to provide for the child as every child deserves to be provided for.

There are so many children living in crappy homes, I don't feel it is fair at all to force a child to be born to a mother who already knows she doesn't want it. What kind of a life are you condemning the child to?
