The proteins in the grains destroy the Villi in the intestines making coeliacs unable to digest food.

They have to cut out all wheat, oats, barley, rye and triticale from their diets.

Inolerance to gluten is similar but the gut is not destroyed, just inflammed.

I and my kids are intolerant and have i ditched all gluten from my house. I substitute rice, potato, tapioca and many other flours for wheat.

No more pizza, bread, pies etc unless they are homemade.

Celiac disease is a food allergy that is characterized by an intolerance to 'gluten', a protein found in a wide variety of foods (wheat, barley, etc).

When a person with celiac disease ingests gluten, their immune system reacts by attacking the small intestinal villi (projections in the walls of the small intestine necessary for efficient absorption of most nutrients).

Treating celiac disease requires a strict adherence to a 'gluten-free diet'. This is difficult because of the abundance of gluten in various food products. However, as guidelines on product labeling persist, and with the increasing awareness of restaurants, food producers and supermarkets to this emerging market, it is getting easier by the day to find gluten-free products across almost all food groups.

my friend has this and I think it's referred to as an intolerance rather than an allergy but I'm not really sure what the difference is, I'm no expert, jus tryin to help!

There's loads of stuff you can still eat, you just have to check the ingredients. There are books and stuff which are really helpful in helping you decide what you can and can't eat, also just because you cant have something in one flavour doesn't mean you can't have it in another. The trick is to just shop around, there is loads of specialist stuff made just for the wonderful people that are celiacs but there are also regular, run of the mill brands that are fine too so have some fun discovering new foods!

It is an intolerance to food with wheat in it. Bread cereals etc.
