How is the National Day of Prayer interfaith?

Why do the organizers of the American National Day of Prayer claim that is interfaith, yet only develop events and programs for Christians? It is an official national holiday that was made law by an act of Congress. How is it lawful that the "committee" (it's in their name) only works with Christian groups, and why is the official National prayer a "Christian" prayer. What about Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, Jews, Muslims, Pagans, Shintos, Taoists, Zoroastrians, et cetera? The only disclaimer on the site is that "all are welcome to participate" and then even outright blatantly states that they are working for Judeo-Christian religions only. How is this "interfaith"? How would a nonChristian even feel comfortable at any of these events that are only for Christians? How would Christians feel if this was being done as an official national holiday to them by some other religion? "Do unto others you would have them do to you". So are Christians saying they want to be excluded?

It is indeed unfair and prejudiced, but so are most Christians.

Edit: I would also like to point out, since many people seem to falsely belive it, that the fouding fathers were not Christians, but rather were deists, who detested Christian dogma. They worked hard to keep Christianity out of the constitution (the mention of "the creator" is a reference to the deist creator, not the Christian one), and America's first treaty, the Treaty of Tripoli which was written by George Washington and signed by John Adams, states that "America was in no way founded on the Christian religion." "In God we trust" and the "under God" line of the Pledge of Allegiance were not added until the 1950s.

As someone said above. The majority in this country are Christian. Also since this is something that was started by Christians I can see how they are working for christian faith only. No one can stop anyone from praying. No matter what their religion is. And as for myself I would welcome people of all religions to pray on the national day of prayer. As far as their website goes, it is a Christian website how can they include all these other religions when as Christians we don't believe in these other religions? Just as they don't believe in the Christian faith. Have you ever seen Jews, Muslims Pagans or all these other religions you mentioned openly embrace those of the christian faith? Do they invite Christians to participate in their holidays? This country was founded on Christianity, no matter how much people try to deny it. There are other Religions here because of the freedom we have here but Christianity if the majority.

In reply to KING OF ALL>>>> Yeah right...Have you ever heard of the vote?....majority does rule. If you disagree with me that is fine, but calling other people names really is childish...grow up.

  • Like in any situation in life it is the majority that will always rule. The groups you are mentioning have a much smaller population in this country. If you went to a country with those religions they would be the majority and you would have to deal with that. You should go to another country and experience what it is like to have a non-Christian majority. I am sure given the climate of politics in this country today if these groups made a big stink about it something would be done. To tell you the truth I don't think they care enough. Christians are the ones who have a history and culture of evangalism and conversion in this day and age. The other groups you mentioned USUALLY have members that are born into it. If you seek them out they may accept you but they are not seeking you out.

Yes "interfaith" should include all faiths. However, I do think that the prayers they pray during the National Day of Prayer are directed to the Great Father in Heaven. That Father, who is God, can have whatever name your particular faith has given Him. Isn't everyone's God an All Loving, All Powerful, All Merciful, All Good God who is there for us when we call out to Him in need? Isn't it more important to participate in a group supplication for Peace than to get all out of joint because someone might be praying to a God of a different name? Isn't it more important that we achieve what we are praying for by just praying, rather than bickering about whose God is being prayed to? If we pray to our God in unison (because there is power in numbers), each one of us can in our own hearts address it to the God of our choice, and whoever is really up there will look at our faith and bless us all with an answer.

When is National Day of Prayer Day? I have no idea.

FYI - there is "Change Your Mind Day" (this year it's June 3rd), a day devoted to meditation, and educating the general public on Buddhist meditation and general practice.

If you're feeling excluded from prayer day, why not make it "Lie in bed and eat ice cream day"? Nobody requires that you *must* participate in it...

No- As a Christian, i don't help worldwide faith Day. 2 Corinthians 6:14-sixteen don't be unequally yoked alongside with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has mild with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what section has a believer with an unbeliever? And what settlement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the residing God. As God has pronounced: “ i visit stay in them And stroll between them. i visit be their God, and that they are going to be My human beings.”

Because in the country with no national religion, when you say "religion" people assume you mean "christianity."

Land of the freeeee... and the hoooooome of the... saaaaaved!

I think that there should be more universalism in it but America was founded by christians. "In God We Trust", "One nation, under God", "endowed by our Creator", etc.

the prefix inter is within. They really mean inter-christianity. If they wanted everyone they would call it intra-faith i think.
