We are deciding between Wisconsin & Minnesota to move to--any input from folks in either area?

It is Sheboygan, Wisconsin vs. Mankato, MN...we need to know if there are any things good or bad that stand out for folks that live in those areas.

Very smart to post a question like this!! I'm in Sheboygan, and it's a nice place here. It would help to know more about you, but assuming you're just an average joe, there is a lot going on here. Just a few off the top of my head ... if you have Google Earth, you can plug our city in and see that we have a good mix of urban and rural areas. The western part of the county has a lot of open spaces. Sheboygan itself has a lot of business and job opportunites, especially for a city of 50,000. Still good manufacturing jobs here, believe it or not. And of course, Lake Michigan is a beautiful sight! If you go to photobucket.com, and punch in Sheboygan, I'm sure you'll see a lot of photos. The lake is accessible to everyone. Local politics is kind of a downside, because there is a lot of hostility between certain people, but most of us find it entertaining. Sheboygan-Press.com is the local newspaper. Many stories online to read!! Tell me more about you (career, age, etc), and I'll put in my 2 cents about whether it's a good fit. I read the part about 5 kids, the schools here always get high national ratings ... and Sheboygan was rated Best Place to Raise a Family a few years ago too by a national publication.

I'm from Appleton, WI and I now live in the twin cities. I think that Sheboygan and Mankato are very comparable towns. I have a brother that goes to school in Mankato and my parents still live in Appleton. The cost of living is going to be almost the same, MN maybe a little more. The landscape is about the same and temperature is about the same. When choosing between the two I would base my decision on which place has better jobs. I would think that either place would be a great place.

I'm a mortgage guy who can do loans in both states, so if you are looking to buy a house in either place I can help you out.

The biggest difference in the towns is probably the size, Mankato has a big mall and many more restaurants. Sheboygan is more laid back and life would be a little more simple.

I live in Mankato and I love it. The hilly terrain is not only gorgeous but keeps the population density low for that small town feel. There is everything one would need: entertainment, food, shopping, parks, public transportation. The university, Carnegie and 410 Project showcase some fabulous art. The school system for young ones is top notch and there are all sorts of family-related services. I used to live in Wisconsin and I much prefer Minnesota for many different reasons.

I personally like Wisconsin. [I've lived there all my life.]

Housing in Wisconsin is generally very inexpensive in comparison to other States. It is also very beautiful and the people, in most areas, are very warm and friendly. Besides, we have a better Football team. ;) There are many places where you can find nice, quiet neighbors but be around nice shopping districts, if that's something you are looking for. Good luck on your decision.
