Many professional players believe stongly in "luck" and "jinxes". They could believe that if they take a shower, shave or don't wear a certain article of clothing, they'll "jinx" their streak and lose a game.

If you're talking about the beards NHL players are growing, that's just playoffs tradition. If you're talking about how every male athlete (except pro wrestlers, who are arguably not athletes) looks like he rolled out of bed and grabbed something off the floor when he's out and about, I think he's just trying not to be noticed so he can spend time doing "normal" stuff with his friends and family. Besides, straight men never know how to dress!

Growing beards is a tradition that players follow in the playoffs. They grow them until they win the Stanley Cup or get eliminated. They aren't meant for anyone to like.

well, the only athletes that look scruffy are hockey players for playoff purposes, trust me.

Other than that, no athlete is grunge really.

I think you're thinking of MUSICIANS, not athletes.

Athletes are tuned machines, not whiny losers.
