Are MiniDV,DVD or HD broadcast quality formats?

Im looking for a digital video camera capable of broadcast quality like the Umatic cameras.

Sorry, none of the above answers seem interesting to me.

The only camcorder that can give you similar to broadcast quality will be a 3CCD. Any make will do. Note that I have mentioned "similar to" because if you want same as broadcast quality, it will cost you probably £2000. Also note that only MiniDV or DV camcorders are capable of recording in broadcast quality. The professional camcorders that cost more than £4000 also uses either MiniDV or full sized DV because these formats never compress the video. DVD is highly compressed format and so the HD (Hard drive).

If HD means (High definition) then i think there is no better format than that for broadcast quality.

When you record a video from MiniDV to your computer, a 17 minute video is 4GB in size. So you can image on a 4.7GB DVD you can record 1hr 30mins of video. I think hard drive camcorder can also give you similar to DV quality but they are not success yet.

dont mean to sound like a know-it-all, but all the above are wrong. technically, minidv (even though it is), dvd or hd arent broadcast quality formats. minidv ranges from near to broadcast quality and while there isnt any difference between the better minidv cams and broadcast cams, it isnt "officially" a broadcast quality format, even though it is. definitely go for 3ccd minidv cams because those are broadcast quality, even if its not "officially" considered broadcast quality. dvd, obviously isnt broadcast due to mpeg-2 compression. HD mistakenly called broadcast because the HD cams that you can actually buy right now still use mpeg-2 compression (dvds) even though they are recorded onto minidv tape. I guess if you shot on HD but ouput as SD, it would probably be broadcast, but technically it isnt broadcast if you plan to shoot and output in HD. betacam, dvcpro are some broadcast quality cams but just curious, what are you planning to make? anyways suggestions are, go for 3ccd minidv cams, dont do dvd or HD (at least not yet unless for a good reason), and remember skills matter more than a better camera, so youll probably be fine with an okay camera :)

"Broadcast quality" is a funny concept. Any signal that meets the legal timing and signal level requirements for a TV broadcast really can be considered "broadcast quality", no matter how crappy it may look to the viewer. If you don't believe me, just watch the video clip of the Rodney King beating in L.A. that was played on nearly every network on the planet and tell me if it was "broadcast quality".

"Best available quality" is a more realistic term for the goal of a professional producer.

Any digital video camera should be fine, however you should look for a higher resolution sensor (CCD usually) of at least 1 Megapixels or better. If in doubt go for a HD badged (but expensive) model, which should see you all right for the next few years.

mini-dv is a 8mm cassette tape, not a video format. Any disc-based video camera will give you broadcast quality.
