G-d <--- what the hell is this?

I've been seeing people write g-d instead of god lately, what's going on there? Is there a sect out there who isn't allowed to wrtie the word god? I really hope it's not supposed to be "g to the d". If it is I'm going to have to smack someone.

Update:

jedimaster, interesting theory, but it's definately used in place of just the word god, not god damn.

Update 2:

Hmm, alright, a jewish thing, then, it would seem, got it. Although suddenly I have the strange urge to delete this question that has god written all over it. Must... resist...

In Judaism people are not supposed to write the word g-d with an o. The reason for that is that that it's forbidden to erase the word g-d. This way one can write something about g-d using adash and then throw the paper away. This would not be possible if the full word was written

The Jewish people will not speak the name of the Lord. They will call Him LORD, but not address Him by the name He revealed as His own, in English I AM WHO AM.

That is one reason Jesus was in such hot water with the Pharissees and Scribes. He constantly said I AM ( I AM the Bread of Life... I AM the vine....when the cohort said they were seeking Jesus, He replied I AM...and they fell to their knees because He had dared speak the name of the Lord out loud)

The other term we see the Jews use for God is YAWEH. That is an acronym formed from the first letters in each of the Hebrew words for I AM WHO AM.

People who address the Heaven Father as G-D are simply following the tradition of our Jewish brothers and sisters.

  • Well you dont want to profane Gods name (even though we all do all day long). Or maybe SHE doesnt want you to profane His name. So to be able to curse a bit but not profane Gods name or get in trouble with the "other half" we just say

    G-D.

Jews do this in reference to God when writing.

Maybe it is supposed to be Gosh Darnit. I don't know, that's just me being silly though.

I thought it was "good day". I suppose it depends on the context. Maybe they just don't want to mention "His" name... afraid of retribution.

Thanks to the libs everbody id hyper-sensitive about offending someone that you can't use the word God anymore, but Gay, Lesbian and Homosexual are just fine.
