The most important non-Mexican ethnic group are the Spanish descendants of the Conquistadors, which still rule Mexico to this day. Almost all important posts in the Mexican government and military are held by Spanish-Mexicans, not by native Mexicans.

Mexican is really a term of Nationality, like you might be "American", someone born in Germany is German (although the parents are from Hong Kong, whose grand parents were born in India, and great grand parents were born in England). However, we constantly use the term "Mexican" to encapsulate the ethnicity and heritage of the people of Mexico, although like the US it also has a complicated heritage.

Unfortunately, I cannot find census info in Mexican Gov web site but in the CIA fact-book it shows the following ethnic/racial make up:

    mestizo (Amerindian-Spanish) 60%

    Amerindian or predominantly Amerindian 30%

    white 9%

    other 1%

The problem with this stat is how it defines mestizo (mixed) as Amerindian-Spanish but then has "white". White as a race has no ethnic distinction. Spanish people (from Spain) are white people. Amerindian reflects the diversity of indigenous people that lived in the Meso-American region. Furthermore, Mexico has had influx of people from the US, Italy, France, Germany, and Eastern Europe from time to time so mestizo is a little more complicated and really just means indigenous and white.

The other consists of Asian and Black racial heritage.

As many as you can imagine. I'm not from California, but have been in several places here. I've seen Mexicans who are blonde haired and blue eyed with the unmistakeable Mexican pattern of speech so no doubt, some people seem attracted to countries that have a paucity of snow.

Mexican is a NATIONALITY, not a RACE.

According to the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics (INEGI). Last census = 2000.

    60% Mestizos (European/Indian mix)

    30% American Indians.

    9% European

    1% Other

    Source(s): Mexican.
