Help my diabetic cat eat please?

Amber was just diagnosed with diabeties and is responding to insulin. It's the special food she does not care for.

The vet gave us Purina DM a diabetic food.

What other alternatives do I have?

Is is true diabetic cat food is only avialible thru a vet?

I noticed even the stray cat that visits did not touch the DM brand.

Science Diet has two prescription diets that you can try... w/d or m/d. There is also one made by Eukanuba (still Rx diet) that your clinic may be able to order for you. Sciene Diet has a 100% garantee on all of their foods... if you cat won't eat it, you can return it.

Anytime you change your cat food, you need to "convert" it to the new food. this means that for the first few days, you should mix the food 1/4 new food to 3/4 old food...wait a few days to make sure kitty isn't having any upset tummy, then go to 1/2 and 1/2...wait again and then go to 3/4 new to 1/4 old food. then you should be home free.

Most of our newly diagnosed diabetic cats have gone for the m/d food with good results but every cat is an individual.

When we had cats in the hospital that would not eat we tried a couple things. Meat baby foods warmed just a bit, and Ensure (vanilla) in small amounts, or blended with a good canned cat food. Sometimes these cats won't eat when their blood sugars are high and like you said than they get fatty liver disease and feel even worse and won't eat. Have they considered placing some kind of feeding tube? Sometimes if you can just get food into them for a few days (well OK sometimes it takes longer but..) they will start to feel well enough to eat on their own again.

Cats frequently don't like the prescription brand and yes, unfortunatly it's through the vet's office or PetMeds.

I would ask your vet about this first, but my suggestion would be to try combining the new prescription food with the old food she did like, and gradually increase the percentage of prescription food and see if she'll accept it. At this point, it's just very important that she eat. The vet might also allow some chicken broth to be added to the food to make it more palatable for her.

A low magnesium canned food. I used to have the site that listed these foods, but of course can't find it now. Do a search for diabetic cat foods. Maybe something will some up. My cat had diabetes and I used these for her. She loved them.

I believe Science Diet brand food has diabetic formula. I'm not sure if you need to go to a vet for it, maybe check their website.
