Not much risk... the baby may be slightly smaller than the average size, thats all. 38 weeks can be considered full term, & babies born as early as 24 weeks can turn out just fine too.

My grandson was born at 35 weeks just this past February - he was 5 lb 12 oz & 19 inches long. They kept him in NICU for about 2 hours to watch his breathing & for jaundice... he went home with my daughter from the hospital and has been just fine ever since.

I HAD MY SON AT 36 WEEKS AND HE WAS AND IS HEALTHY. ALL THAT WAS WRONG WITH HIM WAS HE HAD A BIT OF JAUNDICE.

HE WEIGHED 4LBS 15.6OZ AND WAS 17 INCHES AT BIRTH

I AM HAD HIM AT 33 WEEKS BUT THEY STOPPED IT AND ALSO AGAIN AT 36 WEEKS BUT I HAD PRE-ECLAMPSIA SO THEY WENT AHEAD AND TOOK HIM BY C-SECTION.

DON'T WORRY YOUR CHILD WILL BE FINE.

Labor that starts before 37 weeks of pregnancy is preterm. It is not known why some women go into labor early. If the fetus is not fully grown, its best chance for doing well is inside the woman's uterus. In this case, every effort will be made to stop labor. Your doctor may try a number of treatments-bed rest, intravenous (given by vein) fluids, or special medications that help to relax the uterine muscle. However, treatment does not always work. It is more successful if it is started early in labor (see box).

    Signs of Preterm Labor

Sometimes the signs that preterm labor might be starting are fairly easy to see. Other times, the signs are mild and harder to find. Call your doctor right away if you have any of these signs:

    Vaginal discharge

Change in type (watery, mucous or bloody)

    Increase in amount

    Pelvic or lower abdominal pressure

    Low, dull backache

Abdominal cramps, with or without diarrhea

    Regular contractions or uterine tightening

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD DOCTOR AND CONGRATS ON YOUR UPCOMING ARRIVAL

k.. First off let me say that people who say there are no risks at 36 weeks don't know what they are talking about. I have two ways to answer this, so bear with me. One is from a medical standpoint and one is from a personal standpoint..

Lets start with personal I had a 36 weeker. My pregnancy was less then normal though, preterm labor at 27 weeks that was stopped by magnesium sulfate (not fun stuff at all). I was put on nephedipine, and oral medication that prohibits the release of hormones that trigger labor, and was put on bed rest for most of the remainder of my pregnancy. They gave me cortico-steriods for the babies lungs and I was sent home.

At 36 weeks, my water broke. Baby was born 9 hrs later and had respiratory distress syndrom. She had to be transported to another hospital with a NICU and was put on a ventilator to help her breath. She was tiny for her gestational age- measured at 32 weeks instead of 36- 3lbs 3ozs, 15 inches long. She was in the NICU for almost a month, and we brought her home 4 days before my due date.

Now to the medical standpoint. The longer you can keep your baby from being born, the better. The lungs aren't fully developed until right before birth- somewhere between 36-38 weeks in most infants. Also, their digestive system isn't full developed until right before also. It's harder for babies born early to eat and gain weight, sometimes they have problems breathing and need help. Sometimes they are just fine. They say it's about 60/40 in odds.

If your baby is born at 36 weeks, every precaution will be taken to insure a safe and healthy delivery for you and your baby.

I had 2 kids that were considered early. One was born at 35 weeks and 3 days and was really healthy They just gave antibitics he was perfectly fine 6lbs 4 ozs. My othr child was born at 33 weeks and 5 day and had complications. The doctors told me he was full term and healthy to deliver. They were wrong because of too much fliud. It doesn't matter he saved my baby's life. 37 weeks is considered full term but because of lung development and the wieght will need to be considered. I think you will be fine and so will teh baby.

I think you're pretty safe at 36 weeks. That's what my doctor told me. I carried till 42 weeks and was induced. Just pray THAT doesn't happen! Good luck.
