Decent priced hotel to stay near NYC?

I would like to visit NYC for a hockey game (so we're talking after October) and to see a Broadway play. Obviously a "decent" Manhattan hotel would cost me at least $300 a night, so I'll have to stay outside the Manhattan bourough.

Can anyone recommend a hotel or area that is

1) in a decent part of town, college town ok

2) close enough where I can catch the subway to get to the Rangers and/or Islanders game and also to see the Play/Musical and

3) is a hotel .. not a Hostal. If its a hostal, it should be nice then!

Any links to a specific hotel or part of town is appreciated.

My ideal per night rate is $125-150 and staying 5-7 days.

There will be me and the hubby... no kids.

Try Park Savoy Hotel. It is right next to Central Park and everywhere else you are going. The rooms are very very small but only about 120 bucks and you can't beat the location.

i live on long island and i go into nyc all the time with my g/f u dont have to spend 300 per nite to stay in nyc...and she's a total neat freak...she wont even consider staying anywhere that isnt neat and clean, the 1st thing she does is pull down the bedspread to look at the linnens....so that being said

    www.metrohotel.com or www.hotelmetro.com i dont remember which

its in midtown. 10 min walk from Penn station, by father duffy square.

$195 per nite(incledes taxes), 2 nite stay required.

nice and clean, large rooms by nyc standards.

i got it by booking thru expedia

    also

holiday inn downtown, just off of maiden lane by the federal reserve. close to the seaport and ground zero

nice and clean, also about $200. PER NITE

    also booked thru expedia

as i said both hotels are nice and clean and the prices are reasonable, both are in safe parts of town....downtown is more in the financial district, so after 6pm or so its really quiet..almost deserted.

if ur going to a rangers game it doesnt really make a difference which u stay at.....Penn station is under Maddison Square Garden, if staying at the holiday inn theres a E train two minutes up Maiden lane which will take u up to Penn in about 20 minutes.

If u want to go to an islanders game dont stay in nyc....its a pain in the *** getting out to the island to see a game if u dont have a car plus the traffic getting into Nassau collisieum from hepstead tpke is a hassel.

    Good luck

Source(s): i do it all the time.........you should go see a ball game too

I have the perfect solution. Stay at the Marriott Courtyard hotel in Newport, NJ (In Jersey City). It's one block from the train station which will take you to World Trade Center Stop in New York (it's about 5 mins ride). 20 mins, it will take you to 33rd Street in NY.

I paid about $160 a night (this includes tax) when I stayed there last month. It's very decent and it has an indoor pool. The area is also quiet and clean. Great place after a long day in the city.

I just recently went to NYC on my honeymoon. We stayed at the Milford Plaza, right in Time Square and near EVERYTHING. It is a nice hotel, but not too nice or it would cost way too much. It runs about 150-175 a night. We stayed 7 nights and you can get better deals that way, especially thru travelocity.

    Ft. Lee NJ.

Right over George Wash Bridge (buses run across all day for $1)

Connects to the A train at the GWB bus terminal.

Particularly close is the Holiday Inn
