anywhere in the south bay is really nice (torrance, redondo beach, hermosa beach, manhattan beach) and if you live a few miles inland the prices are reasonable, and the area has some of the best schools in california.

Oh no, not another transplant!!
Well, if you must move to So Cal, figure out where you're working. Its no use picking a neighborhood only to find out your job is 3 hours away.
There's LA, the city, and then the suburbs. The beach areas are nice but pricey. The more you pay, the better the neighborhood. An apartment closer to the beach is more than one farther away, and starts at $1600 a month for an apartment if you want water access/view.
So if you want affordable, you will need to look inland. A decent neighborhood can start at $1100 a month, in areas like Torrance, Lomita, Redondo Beach in the South Bay area, or if you are working near the "biz" the Valley has apartments around that price in North Hollywood, Burbank, etc.
If your job is south, you can find Long Beach affordable but some parts are not nice. Seal Beach, Garden Grove, Fountain Valley is a middle class area and you can find an apartment for $950-$1200 a month.
So again, pick where your work is, and then find a place based on that. You will need a car because public transportation is not reliable if you venture away from the downtown LA area.

depends, are you married? young? kids? care about schools? How much do you want to pay?
If you are young, trendy, want to be in the center of things, etc...then west hollywood (sunset strip), hollywood (near the grove), or santa monica (by the beach) is your best bet--you are going to pay though (although hollywood is cheaper than west hollywood or santa monica). If you are the family type, and don't care about being in the center of things, then encino, sherman oaks, woodland hills, tarzana, glendale, or pasadena would work. Studio city is a good compromise...it is in the valley so it isn't as expensive as the city, but it isn't a far drive to major places.

just go on google or something and type up "gas prices" or something else. there sud be a site on there with about every gas station in Cali. but last time I was there it was $3!!!!!.
And try to look for a good house that you can afford. I just sold my house in sunland,CA for about $519,000 for a 3 bed .5 bath house with a pool, over size living room, and RV parking. If you want land, go up north past Bakersfield. But good luck with you

Nice and affordable? Are you kidding???
I don't know what you define as affordable, but you better expect to pay at least $700,000 for a two to three bedroom condo.
Good luck! (If you have some extra change feel free to send it my way :-) )
