What is wrong with the Cincinnati Reds?

I am a hardcore Reds fan, I've been to several games this year, and I simply can't figure them out. They play great on the road, they have a 6 - 2 record against the best team in their division, and they have the best record against their division of all the teams in the NL Central. However, they have a losing record at home and they're 1 - 7 when they play in front of crowds over 30,000. Currently they've lost 8 out of 9 games after winning 8 in a row. I understand that they're bullpen needs some help and their offense has been inconsistent at times, but they seem to bring a different team to the park every night. Are they contenders or pretenders?

If they can split the series with the Mets this week, they're in great shape; if, for nothing else, at least the wildcard.

The Reds are pretenders this year. They have a core of young starters who can turn that into contenders rather quickly if they develop and continue to develop. The weak bullpen hurts though.

Offensively they are never going to be consistant while they are an all or nothing team. Whiff machines like Dunn, Kearns, Lopez and Griffy will kill rally after rally. To KO is the worst thing you can do with runners on base. At least put the ball in play and force the other team to field it cleanly. 111 KOs out of a non-power hitting shortstop is unacceptable. Dunn's 150+ KOs every year steal all the thunder from his power. Dunn's 195 KOs in 04 was insane. Griffy had taken to swinging for the fences and it has turned him from a great hitter to an average hitter. 93 KOs in less than 500 AB is too much. Kearns managed to break the 100 KO mark in less than 400 ABs. McCracken strikes out far too often for somebody with as little power as he has. Aurilia and Hattenburg are the only two in the line up not generating wind. Even Larue is a windmill. No team has ever made it to the series that I'm aware of which had so many KO artists in the same lineup. You can survive one. You can do it if you have a few but they are spread out in the lineup or down at the bottom.

To me the really high KO totals means the Reds need to fire thier hitting instructor and possibly the manager as well. It just destroys thier offense. These guys get up and on a good day hit home runs. The rest of the time they strike out. Runners get left on base, rallies killed, no reason to steal a base or try bunting or other NL tactics. The next guy is going to KO or homer anyway. Most often KO. So on a good day they can rip up weak pitching. Especially in a hitter friendly park. On a bad day, especially in a pitcher friendly park they are toast. No way to win those close games or pitcher duels.

3 major reasons for their inconsistencies; Fix these 3 things, quick, and we will have arguably the best team in baseball. See below why we will "sink" if this doesn't change.
