Paypal Question?

I want to purchase an item that costs more than I have in my Paypal account. I'm assuming the remaining charges will go to my credit card on file.

Yes. They will take whatever balance you have with paypal and the rest will come out of your checking account or credit card you have on file.

When you make the payment they will show there is a balance that is due and then you have to choose which card or bank account you wish to withdraw the rest from.

Don't listen to the first guy. Go to paypal.com and you will see that I am right!

The additional cost will come from whatever source you have listed in your paypal account. If you listed a credit card, then it comes from there. If you listed a credit card and a checking account, then you have the option to select where you'd like the funds to come from.

Keep in mind with Paypal that if you have any problems at all with the purchase you made, Paypal in my experience has proven to be worthless in helping you at all. If your product doesn't arrive, arrives broken, or there's a duplicate payment - you basically have no recourse with them. This has been my experience. They are not like a credit card, where you can call them and they'll rectify the situation. So, make sure you are buying from a reputable seller.

If that is the only funding method you have on file, then yes. If you have more than one funding method on file, you can choose which method you wish to use. (I have three, two bank accounts and one credit card account, and I've used this feature many times.)
