Do you think honor and responsibility have fallen by the wayside these days? Instead of owning up to mistakes or being responsible for our own actions have we decided there is an exucse for everything? How did this start and how can we end it?

In many cases yes. And it's not just with teens. Unfortunately many people have never had to take responiblity for there actions. Some one (usually parents even for 30 yr olds) bail them out. And look at how much our up bringing becomes the excuse when people do bad. I have 3 older brothers and we all had the same up bring, so that isn't an excuse why I bought a house at 21 and my brothers are still living off mom and dad at 29, 31, and 33. Only the 29 still basically lives at home but the other 2 ask for money and help constantly. We chose who we are and need to take pride in what we do and take responsiblity for our actions good or bad. I'm not perfect but I know the bad stuff I decide to do is not a my parents or anyone elses fault.

  • My answer is yes: we are feeling less responsible, and honor has lost much of its meaning. How did this start?

Cities got bigger and bigger, and most of us became anonymous individuals lost in the crowd. We share our daily lives with millions of people that we know very little about. We can make noise, at night, in the streets, knowing that our name is not going to ridiculed in the morning unless a zealous cop comes catching us, and journalists have nothing else to talk about. Honor and responsibility used to be worth more than gold -- today, money is everything, and man has become tiny.

The trend is an easy one to follow. Check out what people write on the Internet under the mask of a funny name. Do we see much honor, and responsibility? Well, we see a bit, maybe because *some people* still understand that we are not much once we stop owning up to our mistakes, and stop being responsible for our own actions, and our words.

So how do end it? We use our real name? We deal only with people using their real name? Difficult. We reduce the size of our cities? Not yet. Education, I guess, is still our best bet. Kids are watching us... :)

It's not my fault/problem. The most commonly used phrase in America.

Honor and responsibility have definitely fallen by the wayside. I know I'm going to get stuff for saying this but, it all starts at home. As soon as it became the in thing to be a single parent or unmarried shackin' up parents and or both parents started working and someone else was left to teach morals and values to our children. Video games, TV in every room, and Nannies. Say what you want, look at the steady decline in families and marriage and tell me it's not true. Unfortunately, there's not enough people willing to sacrifice what it would take to make it end.

Great question! Since I grew up in Japan, I grew up learning that honor and responsibility were key to success. After living in America for a few years, I am daily disgusted by the lack of responsibility people take for their actions. They seem to think that telling someone they want to meet and not showing up is an ok way to do things. Where is the accountability? What about respect for other people's time? We need to take responsibility for our actions and learn to stop with the excuses. Because I am tired of trying to help people and getting crapped on in the process.

  • yes. Once it's lost it'll never ben regained. politics. politics is all about "wanting" to do the right thing for the people and making a difference. when the sh*it hits the fan, what happens? politicians get "busy" and find out who is to blame while those responsible try to finger bang someone into taking the heat from them. That and probably lawsuits. you can sue anyone for anything these days it seems. so why own up to something and catch the sh*it storm from someone who was too stupid to realize their own mistake and are just looking for someone to blame?

I agree; I also think people no longer care about education either. It's considered "lame" or whatever to take your studies seriously. I think a lot of parents don't really care about what their children do anymore, so they don't teach them morals, values, honesty, etc.

For the person that said "liberals" are spoiling society, I'd like to say that political orientation really has nothing to do with how a person feels about morality and civil responsibility.

It most definitely has. Everyone blames something or someone for their actions. Our young people need more discipline in their lives. Parents need to be more active in disciplining their children. Government is to blame for this. And the people that actually abuse children, now people can't punish their children for fear of being charged with abuse.
