What is a good company that will publish works without any initial cash outlay???

There are two ways to publish a book. The first is with a regular book publisher, and you submit your book to them, they decide if they want to publish it and if they do, you sign a contract, they give you an advance and then they publish your book. They do the editing, the layout, the type face, etc.etc.etc. All that stuff tht you really need years of experience to be able to do well. You help to promote it and hopefully, the royalties roll in and Hollywood decides to make a movie out of it. That's the best possible scenario. In actual fact, you'll probably send outlines to a couple of dozen publishers before you find one who wants to see your whole manuscript.

To find a list of book publishers, go to the library, or invest in your own copy of Writer's Digest. It's a fantastic book that lists all bona fide publishers and tells exactly what each one is looking for.

The other way to publish a book is to self-publish it. That means you find a publisher and pay them money (up front) to publish your book. They publish exactly what you give them, so you have to do your own layout, choosing typeface, etc.etc.etc. Once the book is published, cartons of books arrive at your door and it's up to you to do the publicity, marketing, etc.etc.etc.

If you possibly can, go for the first option because trying to market your own book is a difficult business. Many book stores will not even handle self published books.

Anyway, the short answer to your question is there are no good companies who will publish works without any cash outlay.

First of all, you are only 14 (I'm 15). It will be rare for your work to be published because you are so young. Try writing the book first. After writing the novel, don't think that it's amazing. Chances are that it's going to be crap ( don't worry, a lot of my writing it crap, well nearly all of it is). Which is why something amazing and magical exists: editing. Edit your novel until it's flawless. Editing will play a huge part on making your novel publishable. Don't assume that you only need to edit it once. Edit it atleast twice. Second, a publisher will NOT look at your work unless you have an agent. An agent will be able to get your work noticed. Another point is that you are under 18. I know in the UK that you have to be 18+ to be able to publish your work legally but I don't know about other countries. Try working on your novel for about two more years. That should be more than enough time to make your work a piece of beauty. I'm not kidding. Spend as much time as you can on your novel. I'm 15 right now and I'm working on a novel. I'm only going to work on my novel for atleast a good two years until I try to get an agent interested. A very good piece of advice is to make the novel a stand alone novel. Even though publishers are looking for the next Harry Potter, don't make the novel a series. If you want the novel to be a series then write the novel but leave a few loose ends so you can make it into a series. Hopefully, when you get the book published and becomes a bestsellar, tell the publisher or agent that you can make it into a series if they want it to be a series. Trust me, JK Rowling did this. She never actually told Bloomsbury or her agent that Harry Potter was a series. AFTER the book was accepted and in print, available in many bookstores in the UK, she then asked her agent and publisher what they thought about a series!
