Do you always have an underlying motive or go on a whim?

it is hard for me to conceive of doing anything without a purpose. before i start anything, i always ask myself, why do i want to do this? why should i do it? what do i have to gain? even in my learning process i have to have a primary motive. i just find it pointless not having one. what is difficult however is how people react towards determined and objective people. some see it as callous or too uptight or too serious. they dont have to say it in your face to know what they think. it is obvious. lately, i have tried being spontaneous and in the end, i always ask myself, why did i do that? i see no gain in being spontaneous always. but yes, i suppose having a little bit of both might be fun. but you see, what spontaneous people see as fun might not be fun for serious people and vice versa.

I have a motive or a plan 90% of the time. I need to have an established goal, or at least the concept of one. Sometimes I'll set out before the goal is fully established in an effort to more clearly define what I want to accomplish. Often that technique will help me decide if I want to pursue the idea. Sometimes however the initial plan takes a huge detour that I didn't expect. That can be unsettling. Challenging and rewarding though too.

I like to thoroughly research an idea or goal. One of my favorite passtimes is to look for information online. Doesn't matter what the topic is. Just the act of gathering information helps define the target. Looking for a book about a subject I'm interested in, shopping for shoes, buying music. Whatever the goal is, the search is as much a part of accomplishing it as achieving the goal. I prefer the internet because it offers an endless supply of information.

On the rare occasion I will "go on a whim" but not very often. I just like to cover the bases reasonably well. That's not to say I can't be spontaneous, I can. But I'm more comfortable if there is a plan.

There is usually an ulterior motive to every thing that I do because I am a master manipulator. Just kidding.

Sometimes I'm going on a whim, and other times I have underlying motives - but only if the motive benefits my family. Nothing sinister here.

I agree with the first two posts. It can be both or start as a whim and end up with an underlying motive.

Usually I go on a whim because I am very hyper and need something to do all the time, but sometimes I have an underlying motive, that is usually what I do when I am teaching, but my more conservative students have little patience for my more liberal methods. Fortunately, most of my current students are more liberal in their thinking.

I think everyone has an underlying motive for many areas of their life. I dont think individuals are even consciously aware they are making a decision based on their motives. They may think its a whim only to realize how it may benefit themselves in the long run.

I am not saying ALL decisions are self-serving but I think a high percentage of ones own wills are done to advance themselves in one way or another.

Now, for my personal opionion of myself, I think 85% of the time I do have a self-seeking stratagy to benefit from my percieved whims.

Unfortunately, I usually have an underlying motive. Most people do, whether they want to admit it or not. Especially when it comes to dealing with other people.

i think it's the underlying motive coz many whims could cross ur mind but without a motive they won't turn into action
