Anyone who travels from place to place to do their job is "itenerant." Therefore, a special education teacher is one who travels to different work sites.
In our district, there are two kinds of itenerant teachers.
The first kind serve our homebound students, travelling from home to home. They get curriculum, and instruction suggestions, from the student's case manager at the school site. They spend anywhere from 1 to 3 hours in each child's home each day, giving 1:1 instruction in all core content areas.
The second kind "float" between two or more school buildings to serve small overflow caseloads. For example, we had one teacher last year who served 6 Resource students at a small elementary, who only needed 2 hours of pull-out; then she went to another elementary where there were 5 extra kids beyond the caseload cutoffs for the 2 special ed teachers already there, for 1 hour of pull-out, and then spent the afternoon providing case management and some specialized activities for the gifted 8th and 9th grade students in our district.
