Did man write the bible with only his wisdom of the day?

I asked where dinosaurs were mentioned in the bible 2 weeks ago. The best answers were mearly descriptions of large animals that are still around today. I was raised Roman Catholic which I abandoned the moment I had a choice at age 13. Then came Carl Sagan's Cosmos on PBS TV & I found a new religion in science.

After that I have read the bible twice in my adult life (Job is one of my favorites). It's good philosophy, no more. So is the Tao Te Ching, but without reading a NYC phone book. I think: THE BIBLE WAS WRITTEN BY PEOPLE WITH ONLY THE KNOWLEDGE OF PEOPLE FROM THAT DAY & AGE. If it were in any way suggested by any superior type being: dinosaurs would have been mentioned or decribed WITHOUT doubt. Plus the world would not be flat, & the earth would be MANY MILLIONS of years older than 6,000 years. Any biblical description could be a giraffe or elephant to someone never seeing anything bigger than a camel, no? Plus a lot of things were fantacized to scare people into being good.

Well, I am glad that you left the Catholicism, but I am somewhat disheartened that you would think the Bible was made by man and not God just because God did not mention "dinosaurs." That's a bit immature. You said that you read the book of Job. Do you know that Job is the oldest book in the Bible, even older than Genesis? And in the book of Job, it mentions the leviathan and the behemoth. Maybe you should do some "research" about those particualer terms.

More importantly, the Bible is God's word, and He says that "all Scripture is given by the inspiration of God" (2 Timothy 3:16). He also says that "heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will not pass away" (forgive me, the reference slips me at this time). In that first verse I spoke of, the word "inspired" means "breathed in." God breathed into man what His words and man, in a sense, "breathed out" onto paper God's words. Man did not come up with these words that are found in the Bible. These words are alive and powerful.

I know that I cannot convince you of anything. It will only be the truth of God's word that will cut through your blindness. Take care.

On the issue of Dinosaurs in the Bible, yes it does mention them. You should read Kent Hovind's work titled "Dinosaurs and the Bible". Kent Hovind is a Creation Scientist who specializes in that area. And you mentioned that Job could be referring to an elephant or a giraffe. Let me ask you this, Have you ever seen an elephant with a tail as big as a cedar? because thats how Job describes the creature. with a tail as big as a cedar. i think he is referring to the bronchiasaurus.

Gee, thanks for using a forum that is supposed to be for actually asking questions that you don't know the answer too and turning it into your personal soap box. Real good there.

Stop spreading doubt, it is despicable. Does it make you feel better to attempt to quash faith? Is it better to play the part of the accuser? Hmm, see the lines I'm drawing here....

Also, how do you know that God hadn't created something even MORE magnificent then what we can guess and assume from the sparse and tangled fossils of dinosaurs? We humans trot around this planet thinking we are the be all, end all, know-it-alls of the universe when we REALLY don't have a clue.

People should really take a step back, focus their eyesight and take a good look at what man has trying to pull in the sight of God. THANKFULLY, he gave us Jesus who sacrificed himself for us. We don't deserve it - not one bit after all the BS that we pull!

ETA - Lisa Marie, I'm not the one who put up the "question". As a responded I have the full option to voice my side and/or opinion as thoroughly as I see fit.

Yes. The authors of Scripture had no more scientific knowledge than did anyone else of their time. In fact, in some areas they had less. Their concept of astronomy was inferior to Egypt's. Their knowledge of mechanics, mathematics and engineering was ridiculously inept, inexact and darn near non-existent.

So what? They weren't scientists. They weren't even pretending to be scientists.

They were men who believed wholeheartedly that there was only one God and that he was a Creator God and that He created everything. The how of it was unimportant to them. They were reaching out to people whose neighbors had a plethora of gods, most of whom were uncaring, inept, vicious little scum that you and I wouldn't spit on if they were on fire. But to the people of that time, it was all they had and they were in thrall to these "deities". The authors of the Old Testament kept saying, God is Real. God is One. God is GOD! And there is no other who can be called that.

Over and over, in a thousand different ways they said it. Through history, philosophy, poetry, biography, song, they said it.

    When are you gonna listen?

You say you read job. Don't you remember in the section where God asks Job are you ready to rouse leviathan? I don't have my copy with me but God asks Job are you ready to rouse leviathan who roils the deep and breathes fire? Bible scholars aren't sure, some say Leviathan is an alligator. But some say Leviathan is a dinosaur. Possibly a Tyrannosaurus Rex. I have never seen an alligator breathe fire. But Leviathan is a dinosaur. God asks Job about him in the later chapters.
