Sex can definately be a spiritual experience. That's part of the difference between "boinking" and "making love." It stems from a profound expression of love and respect for each other. Stare into your partner's eyes long enough and you can feel the connection.

I think I have to answer this by telling a little story. Please bear with me--I'm not a great storyteller. <g>
Anyway, I belong to an email list. It's been in existence since 1995 and has pretty much been a closed list since then, so we all know each other pretty well. During one particularly difficult time for many of us, we decided to try an experiment: we chose a time that we determined to be convenient for us all, and designated that as a time when we would all light a candle and then do something positive and joyful and life-affirming while thinking about each other. Some people prayed, some meditated, some danced, my husband and I made love because I couldn't think of anything more joyful and life-affirming than physically and emotionally reinforcing the love my husband and I share.
Afterward, we all agreed that we'd felt some sort of warmth and connection that came from outside each of us--the flow of positive energy from each to the other.
For me, it was both physical and spiritual. The physical pleasure seemed to be enhanced by knowing friends from all over the US and Canada were forming a mental/spiritual bond with me. It wasn't like they were THERE with me, but I could sense their energy, and it seemed to make the physical energy more powerful. Does that make any sense?
This is a very nice thought to be heading off to bed with...heh, heh, heh...
Thanks and peace!

Well I'm fortunate enough to have only gone "all the way" with my gorgeous perfect husband who is so attentive and giving in bed its incredible! From the very first time on our way to get married in Vegas, with a notarized piece of notebook paper with my fathers signature on it in my pocket, I've felt our souls connected as we... connected. When we make love I always feel that spiritual connection. Then, there's the times when we have SEX! Some sexual experiences are mostly for the purpose of feeling the physical release to me though. There's certainly nothing wrong with that!
Hey, you're right! That can be a great question!

When I do it, I generally hope that it shall be both spiritual and physical for me. But as what usually happens, it only gets to be a physical release because it is quite rare that a man see and handle it as more than a physical connection. It takes 2 to tango, you know. No matter how hard I try to make it more than a physical connection, if I am the only feeling that way, it just cannot be more than that. Sadness.

Is the physical not a form of the spiritual? Is the spiritual not a kind of physical to us, people? I think I am having sex all the time with being, or existence, or god, because I do not think sex is describable; thus I'll use it any way I please I suppose. Sexual, spiritual, and physical are all of the same realm of being, they arise together.

I like to think of it as this way. Making love is something you do with the person you love and have a close loving bond with. Having sex is doing any one for just the moment and it doesn't matter who it is.

Yes, it can be a spiritual act and the energy can be channeled or used in any way that the couple chooses.

Although I think the Biblical image of becoming one is more than sex, that is a beautiful aspect of it. And I don't know that there is a single more powerful experience.
