I am a 31 year old Roman Catholic with a MA in Liturgical Music. I have spent many years studying Catholic theology and liturgy and teaching religious education. I am very open to other religions, ideas, and philosophies and am happy to clarify any questions or misconceptions about Catholicism that I can. Otherwise, I'm a "Canadian transplant" originally from California, a singer, and a bit of a wisecracker. And oh yeah - GO SHARKS!

  • Suggestions for "inspirational" rock?

I'm looking for rock songs, (oh heck, almost any genre), 50's to present, that are "uppers." You know, inspirational, uplifting, etc. etc. I'm programming music for a cancer fundraiser and I want good fun music that is non-denominational.

Whatever your take on "inspirational," I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

  • Did anyone else read this on Yahoo? Opinions?

    http://ca.lifestyle.yahoo.com/family-relationships...

TERRIBLE! There might be some good relationship advice buried in that article, but the tone is so condescending that I can't swallow it. I like to think I have a good sense of humor, but this just seems like reverse sexism to me.

    Any thoughts?

  • What's the difference between a hijab and a burqa?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I'd like to hear it from people who know... Any Muslims out there who can help me?

  • How do I clean chemicals off the BBQ?

After coming home from vacation, I was quite surprised and not at all happy to find a wasp nest being built inside in my BBQ. Yup, lid closed and everything, they still found a way to start one under the "warming rack."

I had to use nest killing chemicals to take care of the problem, but now I have a BBQ with poison all over it. I tried to close it and let the stuff burn off - BIG mistake. What I got were noxious fumes in a rather unnatural color.

So I guess I am going to have to scrub the living daylights out of this and replace the lava rocks. Does anyone have any suggestions to help make sure I make it clean enough to cook on again?

  • For you, who is the Holy Spirit?

It's the feast of Pentecost, where the apostles - and the rest of humanity, if it chooses to accept it - received the gift of the Holy Spirit.

So for you, who is the Holy Spirit? What does s/he do? And how does s/he act in your life?

No right or wrong answers here; just curious to see what people think.

  • Does your congregation do a washing of the feet?

Today is Holy Thursday, and Catholic churches will celebrate the Mass of the Lord's Supper tonight. Something unique about this mass is that people take's Jesus' command to heart and wash each other's feet. (For those of you who aren't familiar with the concept don't worry, they're clean beforehand - this is a ritual washing, not a bath!)

I'm curious - do other Christian denominations do this? And for anyone who does, how does your church do it? Are all welcome, a select number of people? Do people participate?

  • Does it matter whether or not I let them call me "aunt"?

My brother is dating a gal who has 2 kids. I've seen situations like this before where the couple breaks up and the kids are the real losers because they lose the "family" that they thought they had. So for that reason, I told my brother that I didn't want the kids to call me "aunt" until / unless my brother and his girlfriend got married. He's ok with that.

Recently, a friend's 3 year old daughter has started calling me "auntie." I don't mind this, since there isn't any confusion about whether or not I'm family - it's more of a "this is what I call mommy's friend" thing.

So far so good, except for one thing - all these people know each other, including all the kids.

Now I'm wondering if I've set a double standard. *I* see a difference, but I know it's not clear from a kid's point of view. Should I nix "auntie" all together? I'm just not comfortable with my brother's girlfriend's kids calling me "aunt," but I don't want to be unfair, either.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

  • What kind of glass paint is safe to use on dishes that will come into contact with food?

I've done a bit of decorative glass painting and would like to do a set of martini glasses and appetizer plates, but I don't know what kind of paint I should use. Even my non-toxic paints have a warning that says "do not use on surfaces that will come into contact with food."

Does anyone know a specific brand that is safe for this kind of project? Or maybe there is a protective glaze I don't know about...? Any help is appreciated!
