In the early episodes for some reason Smithers was supposed to be African American. However, in the second season they changed him to yellow. I'm not really sure why, but I've noticed that as well and there's nothing wrong with your tv. That's just the way it was.

Many of The Simpsons characters have evolved over the years, some a subtle change (eg. general appearances and voices), others have changed to a greater extent, (eg. bigger changes in appearance and the introduction of different personalities and character backgrounds).
The biggest changes can be seen when comparing the episodes in Season 1 with any of the seasons that followed. Examples of these changes include the skin colour of Waylon Smithers and the increasing homosexual references of his character, the hair colours of characters including Moe Syzlak and Clancy Wiggum, and the appearance on many of the buildings within Springfield, eg. the Simpson’s house and Moe’s Tavern.

Yes! The episode you have just watched were Homer tries to kill himself and then has safety signs put up everywhere is from the 1st ever season. There are many subtle differences such as Chief Wiggum has a different voice, Moe is Black and Lenny and Carl have slightly different voices too!!
God, I'm sad for knowing this.

There was some trouble with the department in Korea back in the early days of the show. (IN some episodes he was purple).

In the first season or so he was colored differently. You can see lots of characters evolve in the drawings as the seasons progress.

It's an old one. He was originally brown. Probably some sort of "pc" thing.
