They are corresponding through letters that they put in the mailbox out front. She is in 2006, but notices that his letters are dated 2004. So they are penpals and fall in love but live two years apart. They have to figure out how to meet without screwing up history. As with any time travel movie (or Keanu Reeves movie for that matter)...dont think too hard.

In a weird twist of Einsteins Theory of time and space that makes as little sense as the rest of that movie.

he was in 2004 she was in 2006...but in certain parts of the movie he sees her when she was in 2004. does that help?
