    It depends upon what software you are using to write your paper.. but this should work:

    If you are using WindowsXP, you can find the alt-code of a character in windows by going to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Character Map

    when you click the character you want.. it will show the alt-code in the lower right corner.

    you enter this code into your document by selecting it.. and copying it.. or by pressing and holding the <alt> key while typing the code... example:

    <alt>0177 gives you ±

    You mean like putting in x² or 180º?

    These are ANSI characters, usable by pressing and holding <alt> while typing numbers

    <alt-253> gives ²

    <alt-167> gives º

    Also, some ANSI sets use a leading zero:

    <alt-0179> gives ³, which is not available without the leading zero (that I know of)
