Should I wait for him to marry me?
I've told my boyfriend of 4 years that I want to get married and his response was that he loves me and wants to marry me, but not until he makes some headways in his career or finds that career path that will afford us a better living. He can't give me a definite time scale. Should I continue to wait indefinitely? We're both in our 30's and are madly in love.
NO, we are not living together.

Well, here's the thing. Engagement doesn't mean immediate marriage -- so... is he willing to get engaged and promise that with a ring? He may not be ready, he may not know WHAT he wants -- but he's avoiding the marriage issue. I think you two should have a serious talk and figure this out. YOU should let him know that you do want to get married, and because of your age it's becoming more important to you. You've been together for a while, and if you can't start making some definite plans for the future, you don't want to waste your time (but said more nicerly than that). "I love you and I want to marry you someday, but if that's not something you want, let me know now and be honest about it so I can make my own decision." Be honest about what you want and need, and make it clear that you won't hang around without some definite and HONEST plans for the future. If you're going to get married, you two are supposed to be a TEAM, not playing games with each other.

Responsibility is an admirable thing. But honestly, if everyone waited till they were able to afford it, no one would ever get married. Four years is plenty long enough, particularly if you are already living together. I'd ask him to give me a time frame, then, stick to that time frame. You're not kids, after all.

I wouldn't wait. Life is unpredictable he may never feel that he can afford the kind of life he wants.
