Baby Boomers Only: What is your favorite memory of growing up in the 50's and 60's?

Some favorite memories of mine are trick or treating all over the neighborhood without ever thinking about having the resulting "loot" x-rayed for razors, etc. Also, I remember playing hide and seek in the dark on summer nights, also all over the neighborhood. Talk about a simpler time..'Glad I was there.

Building a soap box car with a real soap box.

Riding your bicycle anywhere in town... as long as you were home when the street lights came on.

Using a 2X4 and an old metal skate to make a skate board. Mine always wanted to turn right and had about 30 bent nails holding it together.

Playing Cowboys and Indians or fighting neighborhood 'wars' after watching an episode of "Combat" with Vic Morrow.

Getting up early, getting a bowl of cereal, sitting in front of the TV (a 6 inch screen, black and white, the size of a small refrigerator with 30 knobs on it) and watching Captain Kangaroo, Felix the Cat, and Tom T. Riffic and Manfred the wonderdog.

Yeah, we didn't have much but we sure had a lot of fun.

There was more freedom for children then, in every sense of the word. I walked all over town by myself road everywhere I wanted to on my bike, even carried a shotgun or rifle through town to go hunting before I'd turned eleven. Kids today have to be watched carefully and not left alone in public due to the pedophiles and other criminal types who prey on them, things which weren't even thought of in the Fifties and Sixties. I miss the freedom, the innocence of the time, and the happiness in most everyone because of the trust and positive attitude in and toward our country as a whole.

It's when life was so full of reality. No Ipods, No video games, No Meth Labs next door. Elvis was awesome and Ike was President. Hamburgers and Fries actually tasted like Beef and Potato's tastes like potato's. Parades , flowers, red light green light, and hide n go seek. Big swirly lollipops bigger than your hand, and Parents who actually raised their kids. Penny candy and popcorn. Going to the fair did,nt cost an arm and a leg, it was actually fun. Drinking ice cold water right out of a creek or a water faucet. When Cokacola still tasted good and movies were a quarter. When I was proud to be an American.

The world wasn't as dangerous then. Children could roam. I had to be home before the sun went down. My father's family commercially fished, my mother's were farmers. I was a tomboy. I loved fishing, playing cowboys and Indians, baseball games after church, the excitement and wonder of Christmas, hide and seek at night, chinaberry wars..... I could go on and on. I am grateful for being from the best of both cultures. We didn't have a lot of money, but we were rich in love and fellowship. We helped one another then, from strangers to friends to family. (My cousins wouldn't let me be Tarzan, though.) LOL.
