Help. It's hotter than heck in here! What can we do?
OK so it's hotter than the blazes. Our ac is two inches too big for our window, and we're on the second floor facing west so it's hot hot hot. We have about four fans in our living room, and how can we make it cooler? What's the magic combination? Is there any way we can not be melting in here?

Limit the number of fans you're using. Fans, because of their motors, actually add to the heat in the room. Yes, AC units will drip from the back, but they transfer heat to the outside, so you won't have success using one completely inside. I suppose you could back it up to a window, catch the drips inside and seal to some degree around the window so as to blow the hot air out. Actually, that's what I'd do until I could get a smaller unit. It might be ghetto, but you won't be found dead from heat exhaustion.

Try to keep out some of the heat with dark, heavy shades and drapes on the windows, more expensive, but effective are window films that cut the UV light. Also, though it may not make sense closing the windows (and curtains!) during the heat of the day and opening them after sundown to let in the cooler air might help -- my mother swore by this in northeast Ohio during hot August days of 100+. One last thought... do you have "cross ventilation"? You have to move the air out of the room, not just around in it. Drink a large glass of unsweet ice tea! (It quenches better than sugar drinks)

For a temp solution- set the AC on a table level with the window- and as close as you can get it- then make a Cardboard, duct to the window- not cute but some relief- otherwise place a fan in a window at each end of the house , one blowing in and one out. should provide some breeze.

The ac unit doesn't have to fit the window!!!!
Put the unit on a heavy (sturdy) table and fit a garden hose to the drip pipe in the back and either ,drain it out the window or if you only have a short hose, drain it into a bowl. No hose? Catch the condensation in a pot and dump it regularly.
the only reason it goes in a window is to get the water that forms in the bottom out of the house.

close all the blinds and windows and turn off all the lights to get it real dark then crank the fans up high! (put a thick blanket over the window if necessary to block out all the light). or soak in a cold bath for a while or take a cold shower. or put your clothes in the freezer for about 10 mins. then put them on. =)

1. Go visit friends/relatives who have AC.
2. Go rent a room at a motel/hotel.
3. Pray for cooler weather.

Try putting a turkey pan under the unit and run it inside. i think the only reason it hangs out a window is for the condensation to drip out there

I'm sorry- that sux! Put your underwear in the freezer for a little bit after getting them wet and wear only that. The same deal works with bandanas- wrap that cold b**** around yo haid.

put the ac next to the window,,,use cardboard to reduce it down so the hot air blows out,,,
