Why do people think that having more money will make them happier?

Why do people think that having more money will automatically make them happier with their lives? I'm not talking about people who have nothing at all. I mean people who think that they will be 50% happier if they make $300,000 a year instead of $200,000. I have never seen it work that way.

I notice lately that my wealthiest friends are the most miserable, in fact. And I mean wealthy--over a million in assets, and no longer working cos they can live on their investments. These people are all married to spouses they don't enjoy being with, but they won't divorce because they don't want to split up their assets. So, instead they sit around and complain about how nothing makes them happy anymore. This applies to male and female friends equally. When I say, "Have you thought about leaving?" the answer is identical--"And let HIM (or HER) get my stuff?? Hell, no!" What do you say to people who can't see that their obsession with their stuff is chaining them to an unhappy life?

Ask them, would you want your happiness or live miserably with someone you don't even love but can't divorce cause you're afraid your sh*t loads of money will have to be split.

Hell if I was miserable in a marriage, I would get out, money or not. The problem with wealthy people is that 1) they think money is hard earned and they're so afraid of losing it all because they have lived life so comfortably for so long. They don't know how to live normal anymore. 2) they have every reason to not love their spouse cause money has become their spouse 3) they have lost logic sense that you cannot take money to your grave. But you can die happy of old age with loved ones around.

I think money can solve financial problems but having money would also bring on problems. Fear of someone lying to you to get your money. Fear that one day, you'll wake up to nothing. It's a strange concept to those of us that don't make that much or barely make it through the month. But ask those that live without millions, they're way happier than the wealthy.

I may not be one to talk, but bieng unwealthy I can say that even more than a few dollars in my pocket has brought about many a problem. I know what it is like to be dirt poor and yet I was happy.

I feel good when the few pennies in my pocket will put a smile on my sons face as we walk out of the dollar store. Yet the other side of the coin is when my husband says that we could have used that money for gas to get him to work. Money is a problem no matter how rich or poor you are and I suggest you get a better set of friends who understand the value of a dollar and can count thier blessings for not having to walk out of a dollar store.

Money doesn't automatically make you happier. Striving for it is what makes us happy. Married couples always have to split the assets. Most people want what is mine and ours. They don't look at it from the legal stand point that says all assets must be divided according the the courts decree.

For many people lack of money keeps them from doing things they can't afford. They figure if they have more money then they will be happier. What they fail to realize is that the more money you have the more of a hassle is it.

You can't really blame them because they don't know any better.

I can say that a little more money can make you happier because you don't need to constantly worry about paying bills

sometimes the more money you have the more unhappy you are. people living in this materialistic age, believe that the more money you have the better off you are, and there for the happier you will be, this is not true, they just aren't willing to look outside there box to see that. happiness is something from within, you can't buy it, or trade it. you have to make do with what you have in life, or work hard to make your life better in all aspects not just the salary wages.

I dont know but i can tell is true. Whe i got married we were both broke. We didnt even have a place to stay. We stayed with friends for a while but we were happy. Now that he is making good money we dont even talk, we dont have a good time anymore. He is hardly ever home. I will give it all up to be happy again but he doesnt.

Interesting. Considering the fact that women are not interested in me and I might assume its because I don't make much money.

When i do make money and want to settle down it won't be without a pre-nup. If she says no, then i know she is a gold digger.

If she says yes, then you can enjoy each others company without letting financial matters ruin it.

sucks to have that life, those people are selffish people and are used to having everything they want, but they cant be happy because they have everything they want, once you have it you want more, and when you get more, you get bored, thats why these people cheat and over spend and are in dept, thats why they cant be happy, if he/she leaves they will have to pay the dept back and wont see any money, life sucks when you are rich, if you dont know how to spend your money wisely, i would rather be happy paying alimony than be misrible with a loser i dont even love.happiness is everything. material things can be replace but your happiness cant.

Because we are a nation of possessions. The old saying really applies. He who has the bigger toys, wins. But you are right. It doesn't always work that way.
