its a game
games have points
yahoo sets the points up to encourage certain game maneuvers and discourage others trying to balance the game play
for example, they don't want people to ask questions and then not pick a best answer (because if people don't read the answers after they ask a question, the game is less fun) so they charge points for asking but give most of them back if you pick a best answer
if they started getting to few questions, then they would lower the point cost or even pay points
their goal is to make the game rewarding for as many as possible and involve as many as possible
they will advertise at you as you come and go so they win their primary game

I don't know. I think it's a bit ridiculous to tell you the truth. I would prefer just Yahoo Answers with none of the other stuff. It makes it more confusing.

I always see it as a deduction to ask a question to make you think "Is this question really worth asking?", whereas gaining points to answer questions encourages everyone to answer more.
