How long have you had the computer? The battery may be shot. (They're typically said to only last around 3 years) You could try replacing the battery if you can't find a better solution first.

Check the battery. If it is old, it may need to be replaced.

Check to see if the battery is registering to your system, and if so, if it reads as charged. If the battery is not charging, then either it is not connecting when you put the battery in, or it is not charging.

Finally, if all that is working, then check your power management.

Contol Panel > Performance > Power Management.

Check to see if your computer has been set to shut off after too quickly after running on battery.

Seems like you have a battery problem. Try plugging it in, and going to system diagnostics to check the battery. The battery might be fried, and you need a new one. If it's under warranty request a replacement. I have had that problem several times with my Dell laptops.

I used to have the same laptop and had the exact same problem. In my case, it stopped doing that one day after I accidentally dropped the computer on the floor, but I wouldn't recommend that course of action. You'll probably need to call Dell - I think it's a fairly common problem for that model, so they should be able to help you.

check the socket at the back of computer where you plug the power supply .. there must be some dirt in there which is not activating the battery ... or possibly the battery is worn out need replacement

The battery must be dead/ not working.

Either a) try a different / new battery (must be compatible, obviously) or if that doesn't work, take it to the shop.

Also, try power properties in control panel, maybe you'll find something useful in there.

Take of the battery for a while then put it back...
