Rough estimate of how much it costs to install new carpeting?

Question

On our stairs (it's a split staircase - 18 steps and one landing) and the upstairs hallway.  The hallway is about 25' long, 3' 1/2" wide for most of it, with one small section that is 7' wide.

I've never purchased carpet before, but would like to do it as a gift for my dad.  It would need to be installed, because I have no idea how to do it myself. Roughly, how much do you think it would cost?

25' X 3.5' = 87.5 sqft / 9 =9.75 sq yrds just for hall way you will have to measure the rest too.

Carpeting @ 22.50 per yrd = 218.75 just for hallway

Stairs and landing probably another 4 yrds.x 22.50 = 90.00

Its an easy answer.  First find out how much sqare yardage you have.  I think its roughly 11 sq yds.  Then just call some carpet contractors, or even HOme Depot, and tell them what you have.  The cost will depend on the quality of carpet you choose.  If you want a tip, always splurge on the best padding.  The padding protects the carpet.  You can save a bit overall on carpeting if you spend extra on the pad.

Stairs  18x1.5= 27' x 4' probably =12 sqyds 
                         27x4=108 sqft /9 =12 sqyds
Hallway  25'x4' standard hallway inside doorways =100sqft/9=11.11sqyds
Landind   7'x5'=35sqft/9=3.9 sqyds

Total w/o the wider part of the hall not enough info would be 12+11.11+3.9=27 sqyds

installation  labor only no tearout can range from $2.00 sqyd to $11.50 sqyd 
additional charges from any type of upholstering around spindles on staircase
