Is it democracy at work here?

Why is it that so many people do not select a "best answer" for their question? I have developed two possible conclustions:

1) People are indifferent; they post random questions then leave it be b/c they don't really care

2) They want to leave it up to "the people" - so they let their question go to voting to allow the rest of us a chance to vote.

Your input is appreciated. I'm just trying to delve into the human psyche...I know I enjoy reading the responses and find that selecting a best answer is part of the interest on Y!A.

I agree with you. I also have a few other theories:

    - Someone is away and/or didn't check their email in time to select someone

    - The asker is not a loyal/frequent user of this site (many are just 1 time users) and they couldn't care less abt points

    - The asker honestly doesn't know which is the best answer, especially if there are conflicting answers. (For opinion questions, it's easy to choose; but for some questions (e.g. scientific, mathematic, where there prob is a right/wrong answer, the person may not know)

    - Laziness

    - The asker would like to get the input/opinions of the voters (I have actually seen some askers literally say this when they have turned it in for a vote)

    - There are many answers that are the same and/or each of have parts of the answer, and the asker can't decide which is best. (Personally, I think this is a bit lame...if there is at least 1 good answer, they should select it and/or choose the first person on the list who got it correct).

    - Sometimes there are literally no good answers (it's sad when that happens, but I know it happens because I've seen some of them in the Voting section, and I skip those because there is no decent answer).

If you have the time to delve into all these people's psyches, you have more time than anybody I know. There's too many people here and you'd go crazy trying to analyze them. I enjoy the responses but that's just what they are are responses from people on a web site that may or may not be who they say they are. There could be millions of reasons people don't choose a best answer for their question. But don't get so caught up in something like this that it ruins the fun of it. This sounds really obsessive compulsive and that you could end up spending your life here. We each also have different reasons for even being on this site, and I don't know how many thousands of those you could think of and the reasons for being here could affect the reasons for not answering.
