What should I look for when interviewing potential employees?

I am a new office manager and need to hire an administrative assistant. I've never had to interview or hire people before, and I don't want to make a mistake. What should I look for when interviewing a potential candidate? How can I discern what kind of employee they might make?

First check out how they are dressed, professionally or slobbish, then ask them questions from the information given to you from their resume. Like if someone says they have experience on a piece of software ask a specific question regarding the software. That way you know if they were truthful on their resume or application. Listen to how they talk, do they use slang are they understandable. Also look them in the eye and see what they do when you are asking questions. Do not hire someone that can not be open, truthful and can not look you in the eye when talking to you.

There are 2 interview questions I've been asked over the years that stand out for me. The first is: If I were to walk into your house right now, what state is it in? (meaning: is it clean, tidy, cluttered, messy) and the second was: If you had a bill that needed to be mailed on your lunch hour, but had no stamps, what would you do? This is a minor test of integrity and honesty that normally escapes the interviewee (I also used both as a hiring manager). They are left field questions that also tell you if the person you are asking can think on his/her feet and show you how they handle the unexpected.

i seek for those that exhibit resourcefulness and intelligence in the time of the interview technique. concentration in on their character - get to renowned what form of guy or woman they are certainly. Ask them to talk approximately their acquaintances and family - in the event that they have any hobbies. stable human beings to hire are not continuously those with the main skills - those human beings tend to be set of their techniques and don't take training or criticisms properly. i seek for those that desire to check and advance. you may practice somebody who's trainable. often, you may not practice a comprehend all of it.
