How can I fix or speed up my computer. It tends to freeze and slow down.?

I notice it slows down whenever I play music on Windows Media Player 11 or when I view media clips online. I have Windows XP Home Edition running on my computer.

Update:

Its a Pentium 4 2.20 GHZ 512 MB Compaq Computer.

You need a major cleanup of your system..

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot-search_de...

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ad-aware

    http://www.belarc.com/programs/advisor.exe

the first one is a tool to clean the crap off your hard drive. the second two are spyware removers, and the last one is a system analysis program. also run disk cleanup program that comes with computer, and defragment your hard drive. If you need more help, run the last one and send me a copy of the output file.. I would be happy to try and help you more. good luck.

    try this...

download windows washer... clean everything out

or something free that does the same CC cleaner

after this click start then run then type msconfig

click the startup tab and then deselect anything that shouldn't be running at startup.

scan for adware and spyware and virus's

trendmicro has a website for this

Also you should list your specs so people can tell you if your computer just needs more RAM or your processor could be a weak one and RAM wouldn't really help then...

but if you have any less than 512MB of ram... get more.

if your processor is less than 1.6 Ghz... you should get something better... ex. I have a 2.4 Ghz it does pretty well.

oh and if you have dial-up and your trying to watch a video... heh if its longer than 10 seconds it will take awhile.

Hey friend......U must have given the RAM of your system....to find the RAM of your system in the desktop right click the "My Computer" icon click "Properties" tab and in that console u will find how much MB's your RAM is.......If it is 128MB or lesser....u need to upgrade it...to 256MB...I recommend u to upgrade it to 512MB...well and good if u are able to make it 1GB!!...

Well...If the RAM is 256MB or more......Ur harddisk may be overpopulated with too many programs....Do delete the temporary files and cookies then and there when u use the net......

For better results let me recommend u go for Windows XP Professional than Home edition....

    Wish u faster access!!!...bye...

My yahoo id is "timepass454" hope we can meet in chat!!!

A defective demonstrate screen isn't a rationalization for pc freeze. yet a defective photos output per chance area of the issue. right here is what i imagine you should do. the first ingredient is to study the CPU temperature. in case your motherboard CD has a hardware monitoring device, you could deploy it to study CPU temperature. If the temperature is going up and down frequently and if this happens in the course of the freeze-united statesthen you fairly favor to interchange the CPU fan. If the above reported isn't the case then you fairly favor to study memory modules. you could eliminate them and use a circuit purifier to spray away the dirt debris on the contacts. If that would not remedy, then it must be a tough disk failure. verify no matter in case your hard disk is giving occasional click sounds. If each and every thing reported above would not help, then you fairly favor to study your motherboard. A defective motherboard ought to lead on on to many undetectable topics. be conscious: less than any circumstances do no longer use textile or brush to sparkling digital circuitly.

Clear the junk. Remove unwanted program to have more spaces. Increase RAM.

First, defragment your hard drive. Then, you might need more RAM if it still gives you problems.
