Who needs mosquitos?

What I want to know is if we could find a way to make mosquitos extinct would it be a major ecological disaster? These are by far the most dangerous creatures on the planet. Is there any other creature or plant that depends exclusively on these little buggers?

Yes it would be a major disaster, mosqitos while harmful when carrying disease are the major food sources for so many creatures that if you killed all of the mosquitos off many would die before being able to adapt..... Mice, rats, mosquitos are all what is considered a Keystone species, meaning that without them a specific part of almost all ecosystems would collapse and the result would be chaos... much like if you removed the keystone from an arch above your door, the whole frame would collapse.

You wouldnt just be sentencing mosquitos to death, but all creatures in an ecosystem would be effected right up to the top predators.... For example, male mosquitos feed only on nectar only the females consume a blood meal before laying thier eggs (they also feed on nectar) whaen they feed on the nectar, the help to pollinate many plants...take them away and those plants suffer and the population decreases, affecting any other creatures dependant upon the plants, then the creatures that feed on the plant creature suffer because of the population decline in thier prey...etc etc it goes on and on. So many creatures rely heavily on mosquitos for thier food source, such as bats, frogs/toads, Nighthawks, whipoorwills, dragonflies, barn swallows, tree swallows, purple martins, paraques, Spiders, minnows feed on the mosquito larvae in the water, and water bugs and tadpoles and all sorts of aquatic creatures or creatures in thier aquatic phase of life.also...Toxorhynchites(mosquito hawks) and predator crustaceans, nematodes, and fungi.

There are so many crucial roles mosquitos play in the lives of hundreds of other living creatures that it would be selfish to say the least to kill off all of the mosquitoes and cause thousands of animals to starve and die, in turn causing predators of these species to suffer. Humans do not control the world and we have to stop trying to escape death by killing other living things because we cannot escape death no matter how hard we try and it is already bad enough that we do not have many natural predators to control our population, because eventually our habitat will no longer be able to support us. We should leave mosquitos alone because they have just as much right to thier place on this planet and thier lives are very important to many... just because something annoys you and occasionally makes you sick or kills you doesnt make it right to kill the creature because of it. We as the supposedly most intelligent form of life should be able to use our brains to overcome and obstacle not our fear and annoyance, if you dont like mosquitos move to where none live, then you wont have to worry, also dont buy to much into all the propaganda being spread about mosquitos most of the irrational fear of contracting diseases from mosquitos comes from the media hype, the chances of you gatting killed by west nile are so low it shouldnt even be an issue, and malaria is only found in certain places in the world and only a specific species of mosquito carries it, if you dont want malaria, dont go to a country that has a problem..... I have lived in Canada all my life and I can tell you I have had thousands of mosquito bites and nothing has ever come of it (ours of course dont carry malaria, and I wouldnt be idiotic enough to live where they do if I was worried about it) Yes, Mosquitos annoy me but I can overcome it and I am not going to live in a plastic bubble or try to exterminate them at the cost of so many other living creatures...not to mention the mosqiuto genocide.... I may not enjoy thier company but I understand and respect thier role in the natural world, just as we have no right to kill off say all the japanese people we also have no right to interfere with mother nature by killing an entire species of animal because they "annoy" or "kill us".
