As bill k suggested, they are often caused by the never used Messenger Service. You can disable this unneeded service with the free program called Shoot The messenger. Available here:

Their trying to get you to download a program, by using a flaw in windows messenger service (not IM). The best you can do is make sure windows is up to date, you've got a good spyware remover, firewall and antivirus. If you don't have these things, go to downloads.com. They have a good bit, and some of the free ones are worth the dl time...some are a little resource intensive, but its worth having them. Maybe even a popup blocker...that's all it is, just a different kind.

I use adaware, avast antivirus, and zone alarm.

Try using firefox too...its free, and more secure. You can also customize the hell out of it.

My first guess is you may have some spyware or adware installed. Also, are you using a pop-up blocker? Scan your computer with Adaware and Spybot (free downloads from download.com) and see it finds and cleans anything. Then make sure you have a pop-up blocker turned on. It could be legitimate (kind of) ads or trying to prompt you to download something really infected. Don't click the links. Doesn't hurt to to a virus scan also.

Ouch. Sounds like a bad case of spyware. Get:

    Spybot S&D

    Adaware SE Personal Edition

If your registry is actually corrupted, then you need:

    CCleaner

    CleanTray

If all fails, scan for viruses (avast! Antivirus) or use System Restore (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools)

    Best of luck.

are you on the internet surfing when this is happening? if so then there just pop up adds.

because if your system was corrupted your computer would most likely not be running.
