The reason they were able to fund Colombus' trip was the Crusades to rid Spain of all "non beleivers" had finished. Obviosuly the people who refused to convert were made into slaves. They didn't use Africans in the "New World" untill a Cardnal wrote a treatise on the evils of using Native Americans and suggested using Africans in the sugar plantations and mines since they were already immune to European diseases, and had no place to run away to.

Some of the Moors were actually blacks. If you look at people from Northern Africa you will find that some of them are blacks with bloodlines going back hundreds if not thousands of years. In those days race wasn't the biggest issue, it was the ability of the person and for a good part the faith they followed. But there were definitely blacks involved in the discovery of the Americas. This gradually changed when blacks were mainly moved to the Americans for the purpose of slavery. Though even then there were free blacks in the Americas.
For the record also, the Arabs, Moors and blacks on the Spanish ships weren't slaves, they were skilled navigators and boatsmen.

At the time, there was no European slave trade in Africa. Plus, Christians didn't mind using forced labor as long as it wasn't from other Christians. (Even Catholics didn't enslave Protestants. They'd kill them, but not enslave them.) That didn't mean there wasn't any slavery, but it was mostly on a local level. Once outposts were well established in the New World and the trading routes to Asia through Africa were more readily available (not to mention the expelling of all Moor and Arabs from Spain by the 16th Century coupled with the trading wars with England, France, and the Netherlands), then did Spain began using blacks for slaves.

In fact , if you check the history, in the first trip colombus used prisoners to do the expedition to America.
They were cheap labour and the government had nothing to lose. this was a dangerous adventure, so they let Colombus take prisoners.
Moors , mainly for their believes were jailed.
Later on, Spanish use native americas as slaves , at least the ones they did not kill wit their guns and deceases. Good example is Mexico, they use a lot of natives as slaves.
Later on as someone mention before they used black
