When you smoke, you inhale in air as well as the smoke. It could not only go down the pipe to the lungs, but also the esophagus towards the stomach.

He could be hiccuping up the excess air that he's swallowed that missed his lungs and went towards his stomach.

I think your husband has yet to "master" the art of smoking (no offence... =p) Since he started smoking a year ago, it could be the way he inhale the air while smoking which caused him to hiccup.

A hiccup is an extraordinary type of respiratory movement involving a sudden inspiration (intake of air) due to an involuntary contraction of the diaphragm accompanied by closure of the glottis (the vocal apparatus of the larynx).

The abrupt inspiration is the result of a sudden contraction of the diaphragm. Closure of the glottis then halts the incoming air. The column of air strikes the closed glottis to produce the characteristic sound: a hiccup.

Hiccups are often rhythmic. They are usually just a minor nuisance, but prolonged hiccups can become a major medical problem.

Logically thinking, something must have changed.

It could be some 'ingredients' in the cigarattes. The manufacturer could have gotten from the 'ingredients' from a new source, or added something. The change is something your husband is 'allergic' to, resulting in the natural reaction of the body to hiccup.

Or, your husband body has 'changed'. Our bodies do change overtime. It could be some hormone changes or something else. And this change makes it 'reactive' to the cigarettes, resulting in the 'hiccup'.

He may change to other cigarettes to verify the 1st point. If it is still the same, it could be point 2. He may seek medical advise.

By the way, it is a good idea to quite smoking for health reason.

Happens to me occasionally too. Hiccups are cause by a reflex action of the diaphragm associated with oxygen in the lungs. When you smoke you're depriving your lungs of Oxygen. A hiccup is reflex action that increases oxygen to the body.

there is no explanation i know maybe some gas bubbles in the lungs i hiccup too and i kinda think its funny that doesnt mean you should or you do. i hiccup once or twic a year i dont think too much about it, now sometimes after a meal, if it hasnt settled the inhaling of smoke will cause one to hiccup

    Hi I'm Garry,

That is soo weird, I've never heard of it as I smoke..

Tell him to ask his doctor as I'm sure he will have an answer for him..

Maybe he has a lung disorder and it could be more serious than you imagine.

    I would take it seriously.

Simply wishing you the best of luck,

    Garry from Australia

actually, ur husband is getting short of oxygen whnever he is smoking. i thnk carbonmonoxide is consuming up all oxygen in him. ask him to take long good breathe.

nd he shud stop smoking immediately, lucky him, he has been getting warnings. so instead of worrying about the hicuups start worrying bout his smoking dear. even 1 cig can damage our heart.

    all the best

He's allergic to some components... Try to use another kind of cigarettes or to give up this vice.
