Work complains about my doctor appointments. What is the best way to handle this situation?

I never miss work except to go to dcotor appt.s. I have diabetes and high blood pressure and my doctors keep an eye on me by having me come in for blood work, or medictaion adjustments, and things of that nature. I also happen to be taking a family vacation, for 7 days, in the middle of this month. (I had the vacay planned before I even started this job, which was about 4 months ago.) I have an appt today with a nutritionest, now work told me I can't take any more time off than I already have because people will "notice" and start to "complain." So I had to cancel my appt. I don't think this is fair. It's not like I am taking the time off to goof around, and it's not as if I have been calling in sick. Isn't there any legal rights I have in regards to this? I have my review coming up soon and I know they are going to bring up that I have too many doctor appts (I have about 3 a month) I want to be able to give them an educated response. I make the apps for at lunch or the end of the day.

    I would simply ask your doctor to compose a letter to your company explaining exactly why it is that you need to keep your appointments. Hasn't your company ever heard of the HIPPA privacy act?

    Seriously, if they will not listen to you, have the professional that usually no one argues with write them.

    Then if that doesn't work, you may have to have a lawyer write a letter. They can not discriminate against you for having disabilities... Ask you doc before your review.

    If you work for a company with 50 employees or more, you are most likely eligible to apply for intermittent leave under the FMLA.

    Under the Act, an employee can take the 12 weeks of leave intermittently (take a day periodically when needed) or use the leave to reduce the workweek or workday, resulting in a reduced hour schedule. For leave relating to a serious health condition, the employee may take intermittent leave or work a reduced schedule without the employer's approval if it is "medically necessary." Again, the employer can require certification of the medical necessity.

    Do you have FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) program where you work? It has helped me tremendously - because with my hypertension and diabetes, as long as I document my visits and/or absences they can't touch me.
