How's this for solving our nuclear weapons issues (see details)?

What would need to happen is that the United States would have to approach just about every country with nuclear weapons and say "all right, here's the deal: disarm your nuclear weapons. WE WILL DO THE SAME (put in all caps because that's the important bit)." And then do it. We wouldn't wait for other countries to go first; we would disarm our weapons, and make it perfectly clear that we were doing so.

What would have to happen to make this work? Is this feasible? Would other countries warm up to us if we did this, or would they see it as an opening and attack us? Am I just being naive? I know it's probably not as simple as what I've just described, but I think that in order to truly get rid of nuclear weapons, the US would have to take the initiative.

What does everyone else think?

(Oh, and PLEASE no conservative/liberal bashing. I know it's hard, but you can do it. I have faith in you. Or something.)

It would be wonderful wouldn't it? In a perfect world, maybe. Not in this one.

Why? Countries like N. Korea and Iran will always seek an offensive upper hand. And eventually, inevitably, they will succeed in getting them.

"Good guys" must maintain a nuclear arsenal for no other reason than to offset the "bad guys". Your question is similar to asking "Would it be good if we traveled back in time and prevent the invention of nuclear technology?"

The fact of the matter is nuclear weaponry is here to stay. All the bad guys are going to work to get it and work to create a trump card to combat it. (AKA bio chem and other types of warfare).

We, the good guys, must always make sure we are on the cutting edge, ahead of them. The question then becomes do you believe we are the good guys? That's where the politics start.

Disarming ourselves would be the singlemost irresponsible act any "good guy" has ever executed...

  • If ONLY it was that easy.

Nuclear weapons have become more of a preventative measure than anything else. Mainly because country A is afraid of bombing country B, because country B has just as many nukes. Then you have country C who would just LOVE to get their hands on one or two nukes, so that they could bomb country A AND country B.

So you see, unfortunately it wouldn't work.

You're not being naive. You're being idealistic.

Wouldn't work, the best defense is to scare the **** out of someone. Mutually Assured Destruction if you will. Any country will be detered from attacking us because they fear 1000 nuclear warheads falling down upon their cities. The only thing that keeps this fragile world peace together is the threat of greater destruction.

Nuclear weapons must be abolished so that the world will be free of any radioactive explosions. Even the US has no guarantee of keeping their nuclear materials safe and accidents could happen. The world should be free of any nuclear weapons to guarantee continuity of our existence.

    This would never work.

There are too many countries out there who would attack the US out of spite. And I get the feeling that the US would keep a spare A-Bomb or two just in case. It is a nice idea, but it would never work.

The problem with letting countries know you are disarming is that other countres who dislike you are going to know. When countries find out that you lost the ace of spades in your hand, they think that it will be easier to get what they want.

Better yet tell the world to disarm or else we will see you smoking with glowing embers in the morning. You have 5 minutes to make up your mind.

Ready aim .......................fire............... end of problem............
