Social workers: do you enjoy your career?

I am considering returning to school for my MSW. (I have been in Human Resources my entire career.) What are the ups and downs? How is the pay?

Im in the field now for about 5 years and i hate it and love it.

I love what i can do to help people. I hate my companies i deal with because everyone complains of how stressfull it is. And they leave there work problems at work at 4pm. Im sorry but clients dont leave there problems at 4pm they continue. As far as the job being stressfull well it can be and cant. I think that being that alot of social workers have problems to begin with that is what makes it seem more stressfull.

Im sorry i think that cops, Marines,Army Etc: have it worse.

    Not Us.

As far as salary for MSW that would be in the 60-80k depending on the case's you do, if you do personal therapy practice, and what type of social work you do. And of course where you live....

Hope this helps good luck. If you really dont love the field or care to help people past 4pm please dont do it. Because you will be the product like the DYFS system that we have come to love to hate in the USA ..

Well, I’m not a social worker but my mother is. From what she tells me about her work,(she cant name names, but she tells me of her experiences) she is often barraged with people threatening to kill her and she is often depressed because of the things she sees. She does good things, which is take children out of abusive homes and try to provide A future for them.

Remember that it is your choice to make, if you like working with people and helping people, you may be able to do the job. But you have to be able to take threats and not take everything that is yelled and screamed at you personally.

I thought the pay was on a scale similar to teachers. The work can be awful and sometimes rewarding. You have to have a certain toughness and compassionate nature to be a social worker.

I'm not one but I used to work with them.
