A friend's husband committed suicide last week. Anyone have experience dealing with this?

She has kids who are young adults. I am concerned for her, and for them. No one seems to know why this happened, and I think that not knowing is going to be a huge problem for them.

Also, on a practical note--will the husband's life insurance pay off on this? I have heard that most will not pay for suicides. Anyone know if that is usually true?

Suicide is always extremely hard to deal with and even harder to understand. It is an emotional trainwreck for those left behind, the question of "why?" is always on your mind. My sincerest condolences to her and her children. As far as the life insurance policy goes, most policies have what is called a contestable clause. The clause usually states that if you commit suicide within the first 2 years of the policy being in force, they will not pay the claim, however, if you live past that 2 year clause, yes, they will pay the claim. She needs to call the insurance company or read the actual policy to find this out. God bless.

I had a friend commit suicide a few years back, and the worst part was how we were all afraid to talk about it. Suicide is almost taboo in North America. The silence was so painful. Don't let the silence grow too big.

As far as practicalities go, I really don't know anything. My friend was a young woman, I doubt she had any life insurance.
