most of the time, if a person regularly posts their picture and is open about stating their opinions, eventually trolls will make a fake account but post the persons picture and pretend to be the person in the picture, making a "clone" account. Then the trolls splatter alot of lewd and disgusting, embarassing questions with the picture of the person they are bullying next to the fake name, so that they humiliate the person.
Also, remember all the stories of people who have trouble at their workplace after their blog is discovered, the same problems could arise here if a coworker or boss recognizes the picture and they dislike your words. And lord knows how one would go about convincing people in their small town, their spouse and friends, or their boss that they are not the one who wrote half the questions with their own picture, because trolls think it is really funny to pretend to be you and write fake stuff.
I think I saw a hundred edna bombecks for instance. I still have no clue what, if anything, was written by the original edna. Way too many clones to really know. Then it happened to another person I saw in the religion rooms alot with his real pic named whynotaskdon...only his clone was named whynotasknod.
Long story short, it leads to cloning, being recognized by people who know you in real life and getting sore about stuff, and other problems.

I dont want people to see me on here because you dont know who are the sicko's are on this site. Also what if you post a very personal question on here and if you have a real photo of yourself and a friend or somebody that you know is also on this site and find out your personal stuff. I also think the avatars are fun and cute!

I am sure part of it is laziness, some of it that they don't have digital pictures of themselves to hand but most of it is that anonymity makes them feel safer whilst berating others...
I like people seeing a real life image of me: give em something to focus their hate on!!
