I worked at my job for a little over 7 months and want to know if and how I can go about collecting unemployment. I know where my local Social Security office is but I don't know if I can just walk in and give them my old HR number and collect. Please Help!!

You do not go to the Social Security Office. In NY, if you worked for 5 Months straight, you are eligible for Unemployment.
However, in some cases...if you were fired, you might not be eligible. It depends on the reason for your termination because in NY, your former employer is responsible for paying into part of your benefits.
If you live in the City itself, go to your Borough Unemployment Office. You can get that info on http://www.state.ny.us/
There you will find out all the facts you need. I hope this helps.

Instead of trying to collect money for doing nothing, why not use the time and energy and find a job. I wonder why were you fired? People who are fired usually were not doing a good job. Did you deserve to get fired? Maybe you can learn from this experience and improve yourself. Just a thought.

I would like to publicly apologize to Richie. Please read the exchange we've had.

Subject: My unemployment question
Message: I've been looking for a job since I've been fired and need money now while looking into getting myself resituated. Also, I got fired due to the downsizing of my company, thus the reason for wanting unemployment. I improve myself everyday and with my two degrees, maybe I'll go back to school and do graduate work. I just can't settle for crap jobs that pay nothing. Know what I mean?

Indeed, I do know what you mean. I suppose I was led to the wrong conclusion based on the use of the term "fired". Usually the term associated with downsizing is "laid off". I apologize for jumping to conclusions. The other thing that had me wondering is your thought of going to the Social Security office for unemployment.
I suppose that I am conditioned to believe that most people seeking entitlements are lazy, uneducated, unmotivated drains on our economy (especially the ones who get "fired", I still think that was a bad choice of terminology). I do believe that the vast majority of them are; but I do understand the importance of having a safety net in place for the people that truly need it for some temporary assistance. I am just sickened by the people who make it a lifestyle and a career (and then pass that attitude down to their children). I have run across a lot of that in my life and my perceptions are of course influenced by such experiences.
Again, I apologize if I have misjudged you.

frequently you're eligible for unemployment when you're fired for adverse overall performance so long because the adverse overall performance isn't a effect of negligence, a failure to stay with universal thoughts/protocols, and also you're literally not on a overall performance progression plan (PIP) that you've deliberately did not stay with.... how a lot you may make is in accordance on your income in the "base 3 hundred and sixty 5 days" which does no longer comprise the perfect quarter and also you may want to were employed in 4 of the perfect 5 quarters. the in uncomplicated words way you may make everywhere on the point of your present day wages is when you're qualified as a results of a diverse pastime that grow to be a lot more effective paid. large apple has a maximum and minimum quantity for UI advantages you do not immediately get the utmost........ as others have spoke of there is also the problem of you with the ability to stay eligible, when you're eligible for UI depending on the pastime loss and also you labored adequate to qualify for UI then you definately might want to preserve eligibility by technique of being waiting and able to artwork, actively in search of employment, attending any state mandated preparation /counseling, you may want to settle for a job even as/if provided (there are very constrained cases the position a job might want to be refused), etcetera...

You won't use the SS office. Check google for the name of the NY employment office.

First of all it really depends on why you got fired. It is really hard to get that one because you have to prove that the employer was wrong in firing you to begin with. Good luck !
