Why do people ask questions on this site and then award "best answer" to those who simply tell them what they
already believed before they asked the question?
There were some interesting answers here: personal validation, merely seeking opinions for the sake of entertainment, Yahoo Answers is a game. One person wrote that he was only seekiing opinions as he carefully researched his questions beforehand, but implied he could be persuaded to alter his opinion if confronted with a convincing argument.
With regard to the personal validation issue-- doesn't it seem strange to bolster one's sense of self worth by posting rhetorical questions on the internet? And yes, I'm aware that that was a rhetorical question. While the Socratic method is used by teachers in an attempt to provoke thought in their students, in my naive'te, I thought, get this... you're gonna laugh (especially you 420girl), that the primary purpose in asking a question was to ACTUALLY LEARN SOMETHING YOU DIDN'T KNOW! That's a hoot, isn't it?

2) They didn't really want an answer, just some opinions for their entertainment.

It's very hard to give best answer to someone who doesn't agree with you. I know that when I ask a question I'm usually looking for an opinion as I have the facts well researched already.
Anybody who disagrees with my conclusion would have to provide very convincing evidence.

What kind of stupid question is that? Because they think that is the BEST ANSWER. Would you pick a best answer that you disagree with? Would you pick an answer that only complains about what your not doing when they dont even have all the details? I don't and won't! Oh well I guess your just mad because you cant bring people around to your way of thinking! Hilarious! lol

You'll be sorry! I ask almost the same question before and most of the answers were crap. People want to supported in what they think is right.

It is just human nature to choose validation of what we already believe or want to hear over answers that are contradictory to our own ideas.

They do it because thats what this site is for.......And the average person is going to award the points to someone that agrees with their point of view, they always will, its the way it goes.
