Do you know how to get rid of the thick winter undercoat on a Chow Chow?

I have brushed and combed and bathed and she still has the thick winter undercoat. I don't want to have her clipped. Any other suggestions?

Furminator! I pay an extra $10 to have a dog furminated..It pulls out all loose hair, and lasts for months.> http://www.furminator.com/

click on the pic of husky, then click on the black dog on next page to watch the video... Call around to find groomers who do this..Groomers aften call it 'blowing' a coat.

I use a rake brush. (It looks like a rake) It gets to the under coat and pulls it out without yanking on the outer coat. Both of my dogs love it. For long haired dogs like a Chow, you might try bathing her again, then when she's still damp (but not dripping wet) use the rake brush and the fur will start coming out in clumps. She'll love it. Good luck!

That isn't a "winter" undercoat. All "Spitz-type" dogs have two layers of fur, consisting of the course outer fur and a finer undercoat.

Brushing is really the only way to reduce the amount of shedding. Sorry, but I can relate with my chow/wolf cross and American Eskimo/German Spitz cross dogs, which give us a lot of shedding to work with.

Scrub her with soap and water. Use a hair dryer and then get a comb that has two different lengths of teeth. The longer teeth reach down under the first layer to the under coat while the short teeth work on the top layer. I literally have the hairiest house in the tristate!!!

Don't clip her, that thick under coat is her insulation against heat and cold! They never truly get rid of the thick under coat. You are doing good to brush and comb her. She will shed some of it but not all of it. Good luck. And keep up the brushing!

thats funny I used to have a chow chow. I hope your chow isnt the reincarnation of mine. you cut it with scissors thats what my mom used to do with ours. But you dont want it clipped so brush out her fur, or take her to the groomers.

Oh and im an ex christian and what christians do affect other people. keep that in mind.

the groomer would be the best place to take you chow they willl know exactly how to get alll the hair off without being clipped!

Take her to the groomer. Most have big, high powered dryers that literally blow the hair right out. Its worth the money for sure.
