God certainly do not need defending. It is the narrow mindedness of people who do not understand that God is in no way affected by mans words or actions. We exist as a result of Him, therefore we need His protection from our own faults.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Eph 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (Stand means to stand for Whom you believe or defend your faith)
It is God however that defends his sheep in times of need for he hears their voices and comes to their rescue protecting them against any attacks of the devil. Do you call out for God to help you in times of need? Now would be a good time to start.
